Acting Chief Risk Officer, Aviva Insurance LimitedAviva Jun 2016 - Sep 2016Entrusted to act as Chief Risk Officer of AIL, I had ultimate responsibility for AIL’s Risk, Actuarial and Compliance Functions, with support from the Chief Actuary and Head of Compliance who reported to me. I also acted as CRO of Aviva’s Global General Insurance business units, CRO of Aviva’s UK Health business unit, CRO of The Ocean Marine Insurance Company Ltd (a subsidiary of AIL with legacy liabilities in run-off) and CRO of Gresham Insurance Company Ltd (a subsidiary of AIL distributing home insurance through Barclays plc).

I provided line two challenge to and oversight of the insurance risk profile including: strategy, business planning, M&A, reinsurance, capital modelling, reserving, pricing, product development and underwriting.

During this time I was variously responsible for reserving and performance measurement across a broad range of Norwich Union’s (now AIL’s) insurance business, including all personal and commercial lines business, as well as being responsible for estimating liabilities arising from latent claims and legacy London Market exposures.

I transformed the premium, reserving and embedded value models from poorly understood, outdated, disparate processes to robust, transparent and communicable ones built around a central data warehouse.

Trainee ActuaryAviva Sep 2002 - Dec 2004I was responsible for reserving personal lines business sold through the direct business channel (reserves at end 2004 totalled £0.7bn), and stepped-up to lead the team for nine months in the absence of a team manager. I analysed and interpreted claims trends for motor, household, travel, creditor and extended warranty insurance and re-built the in-house valuation software and concomitant diagnostic tools and system interfaces, many of which are still in use today.

Systems Development AccountantWest Yorkshire Police Feb 1998 - Jun 2002I held a number of roles at West Yorkshire Police. I started as a Trainee Accounting Technician, and was fast-tracked through this two year programme in just six months. I went on to join a small project team who successfully reviewed outdated financial processes provided by the local council and designed, built and implemented replacement in-house systems. Thereafter, I led the continuing development of the Force’s financial systems.
