About Mike Lambourn

I have extensive experience in a broad spectrum of design, from design research and product design to transport design and architecture and from ideation to manufacture.I gained an art scholarship to attend St Edwards School and graduated with a 1st class degree in product design from Central St Martins College.During school and through university I was training and competing as an elite athlete representing Team GB, which required discipline, time management and teamwork. After graduating I gained experience working within a research center alongside Politicians and policy makers, Professors of design, psychology and criminology and even Law Enforcement.I was then offered an opportunity in Shanghai which became full time employment. This gave me extensive experience working in the far east, an understanding of Asian cultures and first hand experience inside factories which was my introduction to designing for manufacture. Working with a great team, we designed many award winning products, some of which I still use daily.Back in the UK, I took a job as a design engineer which required me to learn many complex engineering principles, including fluid dynamics, acoustics, materials science and an extensive knowledge of plastic injection moulding, which extended my DfM experience. Here I took projects from ideation through extensive development cycles to manufacture, making many design decisions and shaping a number of products that are used in millions of households. See design patents section for more detail.I then moved to an award winning London design consultancy to run projects in a wide range of design specialising in aeronautical interiors and products, and branching out to rail, and the hospitality sector with hotels, residential and commercial developments and cruise ships. We have an exciting portfolio of clients with our work flying all over the world and even have work in the permanent exhibition in the Design Museum.

Involved in all areas of the design process we go through at Dyson on a wide range of the products we offer, some are starting to come into production but most are still in the pipeline. I then moved to our secretive Innovations department where we cultivate and incubate ideas for new Dyson products. I implement a bespoke and efficient design process defined by the critical path of my project. I am responsible for creating the framework for vision specifications and technical objectives. I create the material required for project strategy meetings with James Dyson and the board. I push development of a concept, proving feasibility, creating working prototypes and visual models and presenting options for the strongest designs. I am responsible for time management and deadline deliverables, mentoring Graduate Design Engineers and consult fellow Design Engineers and Seniors on the detailed principles of our technologies I learned in NPD. Detailed knowledge of the design process having been through the complete cycle at Dyson from conception, evaluation and human factors to execution of production. Built on existing knowledge of manufacturing processes including tooling and plastic injection moulding developed visiting factories in the far east, and ensure my designs are realistic for production.
  • Dyson
Design Engineer - New Product Development
    Dyson Dec 2010 - Jan 2013
    Malmesbury
At Dyson, I have been exposed to all aspects of design from concept generation, through to the final transfer to our South East Asia site for Start of Production. During this process I have been in close contact with influential figures at Dyson including James himself, and have taken ownership of a key assembly that has required me not only to engage with engineering techniques but also understand the core technologies at Dyson and learn principles unfamiliar to me like fluid dynamics and acoustics. I have been responsible for brainstorming and generating concepts, blocking out and selecting schemes, numerous validation cycles throughout to prove my assembly works, numerous iterations of development to meet technical and design specs, fine tune part splits, challenge the space envelope and ensure all parts are fully toolable. On sending projects to S.E.Asia, each part is fully toolable, materials, colours and finishes selected, there is a detailed understanding of the tolerance variations, all parts tested at limits, detailed cost breakdown and manufacturing techniques are finalised, down to assembly line configuration and jigs designed. All documentation including part and assembly drawings to BS8888 spec and tolerance stack drawings completed.Working at Dyson has filled in some of the gaps in my experience of the process towards production.
