It has been over 20 years now since I ran my first company, it was through Young Enterprise. I was the MD and responsible for ensuring our tasty snacks sold at local trade fairs. There were reports, marketing, financial planning and the like to do, presenting to an audience of c. 200 people frightened the life out of me. Our team did well to reach the Wiltshire finals.I remember my first proper job, school was coming to a close so I went out there and found a cleaning job. We were picked up daily by driver Geoff. It lasted a couple of years and I learnt a lot about people, especially after cleaning toilets...An ex-girlfriend managed to get me a job at a local direct mail firm. It was boring, but I did it around college. When college came to an end the firm put me through several departments until I started working with data, processing it ready for print. The smallest of mistakes with data could result in huge issues down the line, a very important lesson early on for me. I remember seeing colleagues in tears, and management going red with anger.At 21 I decided to move to Brazil, I'd visited three times and felt it was a good age to do something different. It was a wonderful experience, I picked up Portuguese very quickly after carrying a notepad and pen wherever I went. I taught English in my second year and then worked full-time whilst studying at a local university during the evenings in my third year. I worked at a local footwear export company where I helped at international trade fairs, created letters of credit and took full responsibility for all international freight.I finished university and decided to return to the UK, but the experience, the friendships, the culture and food continue with me today.Back in Swindon I returned to data and spent several years as a DBA, analyst and more recently a GDPR consultant. Data continues to be huge now that I have moved into the logistics sector.I now run my own logistics company supporting nationally recognised carriers with their parcel delivery requirements. It's a dynamic and demanding sector, there are n macro and micro economic factors that directly influence our ability to provide a service and turn a profit.We currently have a team of 15 drivers, but that changes with our partners' needs and the time of year. Our drivers are our most important asset, keeping them on board during tough times is one of our biggest challenges, as is forecasting, capital investment and the like, all in a day's work.My goal is stability in our sector and providing more support to more carriers.
