After receiving his B.A in Political Science from VCU, Mike moved to Denver to pursue his Master's Degree from the University of Colorado. While there, Mike was chosen for the Best and Brightest Internship program administered by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. He accepted a position with the Otero County Public Works office. In that capacity, Mike was exposed to the various practices and principles of land use administration, road and bridge management, and community planning.Upon the completion of coursework for his Master's Degree, Mike partnered with the Bonner County Planning Department to complete his capstone project. He took on the task of designing, researching, and writing a new agricultural component of the comprehensive master plan to meet the requirements of new Idaho Code. He used a mixed methods approach combining qualitative data gathered through dozens of interviews and quantitative data synthesized from surveys and censuses. His final draft was adopted by the Bonner County Commissioners.Mike joined Kootenai County as a Planner I in 2014. In that role he was responsible for the administration of several land use related ordinances including site disturbance, flood damage prevention, subdivision, and zoning ordinances. Mike was promoted three times in four years, finally serving as the County's Planning Manager.Seeking a new challenge, Mike accepted a position as Senior Transportation Planner in 2017. This new position allowed him to expand the breadth of his planning skills and apply his aptitude for problem solving to transportation issues in his community. At SRTC, he focuses on the relationship between land use and transportation as well as data-driven analysis of the regional network.
