Also, happy to work as part of a team as a Senior Front End Engineer who has vast experience with JavaScript. Also trying to branch out more into design or photographer roles as this is a passion of mine, from mobile app design to hand lettering. Please get in touch for examples of my work.
Lead Engineer (Contract) - Real Estate Tech
Brought in to the team to help implement some core features into the product offering. In doing so helped to identify some key issues within the continuous integration system and process. Along with this helped to raise the awareness and focus around a more test driven development attitude within the team. Something that has been a big part of my past experience to create stable products but also giving teams the confidence to push new changes to their product without the worry that it may break.
Lead Engineer (Contract) - Fintech
Lead Engineer (Contract) - Ecommerce
Initially leading two separate agile development teams, I was brought into the company to help develop market-leading applications for Kingfisher Digital. These were made with Angular 2 while it was in Beta through to being updated to Angular 6. We also decided to introduce AOT (Ahead of Time) Compilation into the infrastructure of the apps along with implementing secure development practices and a componentized codebase that all applications made in the future could take advantage. AOT implemented before the Angular client had started shipping with it included along with SSR (Server Side Rendering).I then lead the agile team on the B&Q mobile web application, which we built with React / Redux / Redux-Sagas. We have gradually brought the presence of this new app into a client facing from mobile through to desktop. Currently with a conversion uplift 175% over the original applications. Purely down to a more performance-driven focus to the teams' setup.
Contract Lead Frontend Engineer
Contracted to lead the development of an In-Store Experience to promote and sell products for a large, well-known client. We knew from the off that the application would run on a mobile/tablet device. However, the operating system was unknown at the beginning; this was due to the hardware team yet to figure out which they were going to use.Due to what we thought would be limited performance, we initially built a hybrid native application that could work on any device including web using Cordova. The application made use of high-quality video content which this approach we quickly realised was not performant enough. At this point, we finally had a device and OS of the tablet the experience would be displayed. We decided to build an entirely native android app. Working to our advantage, as the performance was far superior to the hybrid app.
Lead Engineer (Contract)
We created an in-store experience for Google to market products to consumers in large stores throughout the US. The project initially was going to be a Chrome Kiosk application which works similar to a Chrome Extension. For this, I created a reusable application structure using Gulp, Assemble Template Engine and Vanilla Javascript. It was kept simple due to the restrictions building a chrome extension has. Halfway through the project, the hardware team decided to switch hardware which ran Android on a relatively low powered tablet. We quickly changed the structure to use Cordova initially, so the majority of the work previously made could be utilised and wrapped into a native experience. Quickly we discovered that the low performance of the device was causing significant problems with smooth playback of video and animations. Due to these issues, I quickly created a prototype of a Native Android Application to test performance. On successfully testing this prototype, we decided to build a production-ready Native Android Application, which due to my experience with Typescript made making a Java application very easy.
Head Of Engineering
Being the fourth full-time employee I’ve helped grow not only the team but the user base of the company. There have been a lot of difficult decisions that needed to be made during the process of taking the company from zero users to 1.5 million users. I helped to build out our team along with improving day to day work life cycle. Introducing Agile processes along with interview techniques to bring in the best of talent that is also the best fit for the rest of the team. Angular was the framework for all of our front-end products linking into some different technologies made up of Node, Haskell, Rails and Java. Creating a custom performance testing platform for the front-end so we can thoroughly test the load and process speed of our front-end code. Also introduced a continuous integration process for the development to make us as efficient as possible. All code thoroughly tested by both unit tests and behaviour tests, test driven development where it suited the application.
Senior Front End Developer
Working with Apple's custom iAd framework iAd.js we were creating dynamic interactive experience with HTML and JavaScript in the browser accessing iPhone features only available at the time to Native apps. Using the gyroscope to sit the user inside prototype cars for BMW and explore the interior by moving the phone around them. Also interacting with the camera and creating custom filters for VO5.
Senior Front End Developer
Working from San Francisco for 3 months directly reporting to Google's Project managers, we created Google Databoard. It was a tablet focused research project which we visualised lots of data points into custom graphs. The user could then collate these into their own data board which could be shared through social networks. We used Raphael.js to create custom charts and also rewrote some of the library to be more performant for responsive reasons. Everything was written in a VanillaJS MVC fashion. While in San Francisco, I also taught the team how to work in a more agile manner.
