Having had a blue chip financial training, but having worked in the SME sector for most of my life I have a very hands on approach with a wide base of skills. These are applicable across a number of sectors and I provide this advice either through a consultancy approach, or via a non-executive appointment, with a strong emphasis on team building with and within the client organisation. I have a particular emphasis on financial rigour for sustainable development and on all aspects of service delivery and what makes that work best. I work to set strategic goals for clients and to set out clear parameters against which these are measured and managed, seeking to ensure that each stage of a company’s operation is as efficient as it can be and that there are no conflicting processes involved.

I was appointed as chairman to provide strategic direction to improve operational systems and to generate third party income alongside existing established revenue streams. During my tenure the productivity, margins and customer satisfaction levels substantially improved with the introduction of more advanced control and monitoring systems. External accreditations were obtained and a roadmap was put in place which will allow the business to succeed with further external contract works. Individuals were developed which has resulted in a fully functioning board as the company pursues its objectives further.

SPV concession holder for London Borough of Brent street lighting PFI scheme, the pathfinder for all other street lighting PFI projects in the UK. I managed the SPV, liaising between the client and the operational sub-contractor, ensuring contractual obligations were met. Bought out the other SPV shareholder to manage 100% of the equity interest. Repaid project loans early as a result of enhanced cash-flow and produced above budget results for each year.

Lighting and electrical services company providing design, installation, maintenance and finance services to the retail, commercial and industrial sectors nationally from a network of branches across the country. Started the company in order to exploit a perceived opportunity to bring new lighting maintenance practices to the retail sector. Rapidly developed the company to acquire long term national contracts with many of the largest high street names in the UK. Client base has included all or the majority of the lighting maintenance for Tesco Stores, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, BhS, Dixons Stores Group, Debenhams, HBOS, Barclays, Somerfield, TK Maxx, Clark’s, Matalan, Co-op, Iceland, Toys R Us with significant contracts for many other major high street names. Led the industry on service delivery initiatives and IT implementation as well as the green agenda including lamp recycling, and energy saving scheme developments. Successfully integrated acquisition and extracted substantial value from this and as the industry moved through technological development, moved the company from a maintenance bias to a full design, install and maintain service provider to exploit the rapid emergence of energy led LED lighting conversion projects.

Privately owned lighting group incorporating manufacturing and services companies established since 1961. Acted in a variety of roles to the Group Holding Company over the whole period of office including Group Finance Director and executive Director for the Commercial Property portfolio. Overall financial stewardship role for the group throughout the period ensuring appropriate resources were in place for each of the trading companies through the economic cycles over 24 years. Oversaw strategic acquisitions and disposals over time to move the company into a higher margin position and to focus on developing market sectors.

One of the largest street lighting maintenance and installation companies in the country with contracts across England with local authorities, the Highways Agency and developers. After being appointed at a difficult time for the company I turned the company around from losing at rate of £3m per annum to substantial profitability in 2 years and generated positive cash-flow of £7m in first 12 months. Negotiated successful exit from loss making term maintenance contracts with local authorities with reputation of the company enhanced and re-negotiated other contracts to add value. Acquired loss making competitor for £1 and turned it around to add significant value to the company. Formed highly successful joint venture arrangement with major French group to bid successfully for 3 further PFI contracts which then led to successfully negotiating the sale of the business to the French group (Bouygues SPA)

An industry leader in the development and production of satellite image interpretation hardware and software systems, the company won the Queen's Award for Technology in 1990 and was sold to a US corporation late in 1990.
