In my function as R&D Chemist at Bolidt I am mainly focussed on the development of new products and the optimization of existing products concerning liquid to solid flooring solutions based on thermosetting synthetics. My method of working on developing thermosetting formulations is a combination of a theoretical, empirical and practical approach:● Theoretical by using knowledge, reason and my visualizing skills to understand and conceptualize the (hypothetical) chemical interactions in a formulation in order to determine the most effective route of developing.● Empirical by using my experience with various raw materials.● Practical by quick and dirty testing and a hand-on mentality.Examples of my tasks and past challenges are:● The improvement of the fire retardent properties of our flooring systems with regard to IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 2 and Part 5;● The development of a high gloss transparant polyurethane flooring system.● The improvement of the color stability of pigments in various formulations;● The improvement of deaeration in various formulations;● The optimization of rheological properties in various formulations for improved storage stability and applicability;● The development of a proximity detecting flooring system;● Guiding the scale-ups of new products in our production facilities;● Quality control.

During my final internship in the Polymer Laboratory at the AkzoNobel site in Sassenheim, I:• Synthesized alkyd resins using azeotropic distillation and the fusion process.• Performed polyamide modifications on alkyd resins to impart thixotropy.• Determined various pitfalls of a specific recipe on laboratory scale.• Optimized laboratory scale experiments.• Performed rheometric measurements on samples to determine rheological behavior, and titrations to determine the chemical properties.• Reported the results to my supervisors through various meetings and presentations.

Ceramics Research Centre, Velsen-Noord

During my minor internship at the Ceramics Research Centre, I:• Investigated the influence of the coke breeze content and the air flow on the sintering process using a self-built experimental setup, measuring the gas composition, temperature, pressure, and the weight of the mixture before and after the experiments.• Performed data analysis and quantitative calculations on the primary data to determine trends.• Interpreted the results to formulate multiple hypotheses for the physical and chemical processes taking place during the experiments.
