Product Manager, Redlaser & New Ventures

San Jose, Ca, Us

I transferred from RedLaser to eBay's New Ventures team to tackle a series of major new opportunities we'd identified. The New Ventures team was an internal innovation lab, incubating and launching new features across the world. I led a team to build an analytics business using location data, developed new concepts, conducted user research, wrote product requirements, and built go-to-market strategies for a host of experimental products including an eBay-operating MVNO (cell network). In 2014, I received a "Critical Talent" award.

Head Of Business Development (Redlaser)

San Jose, Ca, Us

I learned a lot as a consultant, but I always wanted to get back into a company where I could get my hands dirty. I joined RedLaser, an independent team within eBay built via an acquisition, which aimed to bridge online and offline commerce — and built some groundbreaking technology around barcode scanning to facilitate this process. I led business development for RedLaser, which meant I did a bit of everything. I negotiated partnerships, handled customer support, wrote blog posts, ran our weekly metrics meetings, and wrote WordPress plugins to improve our onboarding process. In the process, I increased revenue by 400%, won millions of dollars in new business via affiliate advertising and licensing our barcode scanning SDK — and identified a few big new opportunities for eBay. As I focused more on these opportunities, I made the jump into product management.

Co-Founder

Copress

CoPress was an organization devoted to innovative online journalism. I spearheaded creation of an open-source hosting and support service for university newspapers which competed with incumbents from major media corporations and won 50% marketshare of the top-rated US college newspapers. I led a team to build plugins, products, and scripts to scale offerings (writing a fair bit of code in the process); our tools are still in use at The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others.CoPress was successful in transforming college media: We toppled a powerful incumbent and kicked off an era of innovation for college papers. In the process, I caught the tech & product development bug.I loved my time at CoPress. We were transformative, but weren't profitable. I realized I needed to learn how to operate a successful business, which sent me to my next venture — the consulting firm McKinsey.
