Working at OEI has been a wonderful introduction into the world of environmental consulting. I am currently working with OEI on the Invasive Spartina Project in the wetlands throughout the Bay Area. This project seeks to protect the long term health of these extremely threatened habitats by removing invasive cordgrass which is wreaking havoc on the delicate ecology of the wetlands. I have gained experience in plant identification, herbicide application, and the use of GIS technology in a conservation setting. These areas provide habitat to a variety of protected species and so I have also received training in the laws and guidelines which govern interactions with such species.

I joined Carol Shennan's lab after working with her in conjunction with my upper division internship. I contributed to research on anaerobic soil disinfestation with practical applications in organic farming. I worked in the field gathering soil and plant samples as well as installing sensors and wiring data collectors. In the lab I performed soil and plant matter extractions, conducted incubation trials, monitored elemental analysis of soils, input data, and assisted researchers with related projects. Data I collected has been used in published, peer reviewed scientific papers.

For three months I lived and worked on a conservation farm on the big island of Hawaii. In my time there I learned the principles of conservation farming, no-till agriculture, medium scale composting, and soil ecology. The farm specializes in exceptionally high quality coffee, rare avocado varietals, and traditional strains of taro. I provided labor in the form of planting, weeding, mulching, irrigating, and harvesting in return for room and board, as well as education in the aforementioned principles from the farm owners. In addition I worked with a researcher from the State of Hawaii to track and limit the spread of Coffee Leaf Rust in the Kona coffee belt.

I worked as an intern at the Younger Lagoon Natural Reserve for six months with a team of students. Before the onset of the pandemic this was an onsite position where my team worked under the direction of post-grad supervisors to restore a 47 acre plot of heavily degraded, coastal prairie land. This involved extensive weed control, propagation of indigenous plants, planting, and maintenance. After the lockdown began the internship became remote and was focused on learning about native plants, indigenous land stewardship, restoration research, and long range development planning.
