I am a storyteller, and here at NAMI Westside-LA I have been moved by the personal stories of those with mental illness. At NAMI Westside-LA I have revamped and/or created written materials, aiding as the organization moves from a small, volunteer-based group to a larger and more professional presence in the community. I am responsible for foundation grant-seeking, and have brought in funds in increasing amounts each year, enabling our program offerings to grow to better fit the needs of our community, in spite of the worst fund-raising environment in the last 50 years. I also create fund-raising letters, brochures, PR materials, and op-ed articles and commentaries, and our newsletter, which you can read on our website. It informs anyone with an interest in brain illness on a wide breadth of issues, from local events to exciting new research on healing the brain. Ultimately my work has been responsible for doubling of individual donations, and a 670% increase in grants and corporate gifts received, and an upsurge in volunteers, resulting in our organization offering five times as many free community programs as we did when I came onboard. Revamped newsletter from a “calendar of events” into a clearinghouse of information on mental health research and advocacy, legislative information and powerful personal narratives – converting to a marketing tool as well as an informational resource; by offering a “Newsletter Only” new membership category, increased membership by ten percent. In two years, media coverage increased dramatically, funding increased, and attendance at membership events has set new records.

Initially created, developed and marketed successful private weekend workshop program for writers and industry executives seeking insight into the situation comedy form. I expanded it into a book, audio format and, ultimately, the first sit-com writing course offered at the college level. I adapted the level of complexity to various audiences, from community college students to graduate programs and professional seminars and taught the course myself at over 20 colleges and universities. I subsequently converted it into an interactive, on-line format, which is still being offered at more than 1500 colleges, universities, and continuing education programs in North America.

Conceived, created, wrote and oversaw publication of various how-to books and ancillary materials, most notably Shopping Secrets of Southern California, The Ultimate Bargain Hunter’s Guide. Shopping Secrets went through four editions and became the top-selling shopping guide in the region. In the course of promoting that book, I developed and implemented media campaigns for every shopping occasion, creating press opportunities, including coverage from every major news outlet in the area, and merchandising venues for retailers. My column, "Shopping with Mindy,” appeared bi-weekly for five years on the front page of the Style section of the Thompson LA Newspaper Group newspapers (Pasadena Star News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Whittier Daily News; combined paid readership: two million). In 1998 the column was awarded the prestigious Los Angeles Press Club Journalism Award for “Specialty Feature Writing” for my body of work. For two years (1999-2001), I also hosted a bi-weekly radio call-in show in Los Angeles.
