I grew up with a brother on the spectrum. I was the annoying little sister that ABA therapists had to either tactfully dismiss or creatively include in their activities. My parents had a behavior consultant, which to me, looked like a lot of Hide-and-Go-Seek, video games, and chore charts. Though I wasn't a fan of the chore charts, at eight years old, I decided that I too wanted to get paid to play. Since then, naturally, I've done a lot of learning along the way, both formally, in the classroom, and the hard way- getting kicked in the face by a kid trying to get out of a toilet training. I've come to realize that looking like you're playing, while you're actually running very specific program goals is one of the most important skills I've ever learned. A skilled ABA therapist is the ultimate multi-tasker: capturing and contriving learning opportunities during "free play" and planned activities, all the while collecting data on every trial. Now, as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I consider it my duty to teach, train, and disseminate the skillfully playful implementation of behavior intervention plans and program goals.
