I founded beheld where we translate the science of empathetic human connection to medical outcomes. We work with the health system to pay for and scale a remotely-delivered, tech-enabled deeply human service that takes a mental health-first approach to chronic condition management. We build on clinical trial results that one health plan CMO called "better than drugs". Our first contracts are for maternal health and diabetes management for people on Medicaid.As a researcher and founder of Factor Health Labs in the Dept of Population Health at Dell Med/UT Austin, I also study, through community-based clinical trials, the impact of food and grocery gift cards on clinically-relevant outcomes of better disease management (diabetes, kidney, maternal).Previously, as founding Vice Dean at Dell Medical School in Austin, I helped build a new center for academic medicine, founded the biomedical translational hub (continues to grow) and developed the institution's focus on population health. I continue to mentor students in the leadership development core (1st year) and the social entrepreneurship practicum (3rd year). Previously at UCSF I was Exec Director, CIO and member of the board of then largest NIH-funded ($100million) translational science accelerator in a network of 60 academic medical institutions in the country. I began by creating a 'virtual home' for translational scientists, award-winning, yes, but more important, is still thriving 15 years on.I'm a behavioral and systems neuroscientist trained at UCSF. I have also built teams together with whom we've developed award-winning software in industry and academic medicine. I've advised my favorite credit union, UFCU, to help align purpose and business, and an exciting technology-driven retail diagnostic testing startup, Babson Diagnostics. I'm on the board of a North and South Carolina health innovation initiative, CaroNova, sheperded by the two state healthcare associations and the Duke Endowment.
