About Min Wang
Highly motivated and self-driven chemist with a strong background in drug metabolism, human gut microbiome, and natural product biosynthesis. Easy-going person who enjoyed working in a collaborative manner and/or in a multi-disciplinary team. Passionate about translating science and bringing technical innovations into therapeutics for human disease.During my PhD, I focused on the biosynthetic mechanism that bacteria use to produce the lincosamide antibiotics, Lincomycin A and celesticetin. In my first project, I was obsessed with the mysterious origin of sulfur atom in the structure of lincomycin A, which has been used in clinic for more than half a century. As part of teamwork, I discovered an unprecedented role of two small-molecule thiols, ergothioneine and mycothiol, which act as assembly template and sulfur donor, respectively. In my second project, I followed up to solve the enzymatic mechanism that drive the distinct S-functionalization of lincosamide antibiotics. These works had resulted in the publications in top journals, including Nature and JACS. Fascinated by the microbial metabolism, I continued my postdoc training in a new field, human gut microbiota, by which hundreds of small molecules are produced to impact human health and disease. To establish causality and mechanism of interactions between microbiome and host, I developed a novel framework to interrogate the biological function of single niche/strain/molecule in a highly complex microbiome model.Throughout my academic training, I cultivated all the techniques, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills, that are critical to be a successful scientist. In addition, I also developed some important attributes that I believe will have a longer impact on my career development, including but not limited to, fast learning/teamwork and collaboration/project management/detail orientation/diligency and efficiency
