Artist Statement:My art reflects the Japanese aesthetic principle of embracing and appreciating the imperfections in all things natural and man-made. There is beauty in the unusual, the asymmetrical, in the worn and faded, in the rustic and weathered, in the brief and cyclical. Like faded and torn pieces of paper in a well-viewed scrapbook, a single flower petal as it floats downstream in a river or the rust and patina on a tin roof in Jamaica – they are all examples of the beauty of imperfection in the world around us. My art captures the beauty that so easily passes us by if we fail to stop and take a moment to breathe, think and be.I am inspired not by what I see, but by how my senses react to the subject. In our daily struggle to find perfection, we often miss what is truly beautiful. As a self-taught experimental painter, I achieve the texture of my paintings using acrylic gel. Falling into a trance-like state when working on the initial layer of gel on fresh canvas, I imagine the colours, movements and shadows that will soon take form in the following stages of my work.The metallic paints, inks and acrylics that I use tell a story of some of the most mundane things. At first glance, you see rust.
