During the pandemic, I created my own small business creating customized gifts and apparel using graphic design. I launched my own social media, websites, and advertisements, and ended up making a great side business. Through the constantly changing times, many people throughout the world were faced with stress and worry. I chose to adapt to the change in pace and difficult situation. I had to think out of the box and work around any barriers. I learned customer service skills, how to own and operate a business, and adaptability.

Through this job, I gained professional skills through interacting with alumni and faculty from Detroit Mercy. I also grew in my computer software skills from having maintained the university records, online platforms, and communications. I was able to grow in my strong detail-orientation, and organization skills, as well as reliability and teamwork through working as a team to coordinate events, notes, RSVP's and other administrative tasks.

I am a Teaching Assistant for an Organic Chemistry Research course. I am able to grow in my own knowledge, while assisting 25 students in growing their understanding of the material. We dive into the methods and steps taken to purify and extract an organic compound from its other components, as well as explore the functional groups and makeup of the organic compound. Aside from assisting with laboratory experiments, I kept the laboratory organized, clean and prepared for each meeting. This displays my urge to learn and grow, not only for myself, but to work as a team to learn as well.

In this research lab, we learned about the history and medicinal usage of cannabidiol in a variety of products. Also, I was able to extract cannabidiol from a particular substance that claimed to contain cannabidiol. The methods of distillation, extraction and purification were completed in an effort to see if the product was correct in its claims. A majority of my class, including myself found that our products contained little to none of what they claimed to hold. Through this I learned problem solving skills, by repeating processes that were contaminated or completed improperly.

As a fitness instructor, I developed leadership, interpersonal skills, and adaptability. Every week, I created my own workout and coached the participants through it. I enjoyed this job because I was able to help people feel confident and happy in their bodies. In many instances, I was required to adapt to different situations and people. Each workout that I planned, needed to be able to be modified for people to be able to use lighter or heavier weights. I always made sure to put the students’ best interests first and maintain a flexible schedule to keep them safe and meet their needs.

Over summer, I was hoping to be able to participate in research opportunities on campus in order to further my knowledge of science and creative ways of thinking. Campus was not open; therefore, I contacted a professor at my university in hopes of creating a summer research club for myself and other students to learn and grow in. I recruited a group of about 25 students and created a weekly agenda to go through for the entire summer. We researched numerous topics, and were all introduced to the study of research.

This agriculture-based research class was focused on using phytoremediation techniques to imitate extraction of chemicals from soil. We used different colored dyes paired with fruit and vegetable peels to illustrate the effects. We were searching to see which type of peel would be most effective in eliminating the dye from the solution and absorbing the most dye. This was done to be resourceful and find alternate ways to protect the soil in local areas. I learned problem solving as well as scientific inquiry about processes and making hypotheses in a trial-and-error setting.

Through nannying, I have developed deep relationships with the children and families that I work with. I had a set schedule, but if needed would help them at moment's notice if I could. I learned problem solving skills and have become confident in discussing areas of concern with the parents. Aside from growing close to the nine-year-old girl, and one and three-year-old boys, I cared for their basic needs, toilet training, changing diapers, physical and mental activity, learning, and feeding. Managing three children at one time all day has taught me to handle stressful environments and adapt quickly.

I developed work ethic and compassion for others through teaching and caring for up to twelve children each day ranging from infants to preschoolers. While caring for basic needs including diaper changes, toilet training, feeding, and naptime, I also connected with each child on an emotional and personal level. I was able to teach them basics in order to grow in their knowledge and social skills. It was very gratifying to see the impact that I had on the children by helping them.

I learned effective ways to talk to patients while being confident and compassionate. I brought patients back to their rooms, discussed their treatment, any issues, and post-op with them. I prepared the room and equipment for procedures and worked beside to dentist on the patient. I also gained a great knowledge of the dental career. I was able to discover the steps of each procedure and why each is taken. The office I worked in had six rooms operating at a time, and I helped in multiple rooms at a time. It was a fast-paced that helped me learn how to adapt in stressful environments.

Teach young children the basics of sports and how to be a part of a team. Officiate games and help the kids learn the rules.
