About Mitchell Mccrory
Throughout my time at the University of Waterloo, I have been focusing my education and research in developing an understanding in geomorphological and environmental processes. My research involves using pre-gathered or physically gathering data in the field, through various sampling techniques, and writing reports based on the trends in the data, as well as the future implications of certain human practises and their effect on various environmental sectors. I have become very comfortable using Microsoft Office programs and QGIS/ARCGIS. I also have basic knowledge of computer programming applications such as Python C++ and C#. I was fortunate enough to utilize these learnings/skills during my time working for the Hydrometeorology Research Group at the University of Waterloo, where we looked to develop a further understanding of soil-vegetation-atmospheric interactions, especially as influenced by hydrologic and climatic conditions. In this opportunity, I was fortunate enough to help gather field data, input the data into a spread sheet, and use GIS analysis and modelling to format the data and help myself and the rest of the team understand the correlation. During coop, I worked as an Outdoor Education Facilitator for the Catholic Youth Organization, at the Camp Brébeuf site. This opportunity provided myself with an excellent understanding of working in a team environment, how to work with people of various different age groups and settings, improved my leadership skills, and helped myself become more comfortable in adapting to certain changes within the work environment. This experience has also enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills while I taught students elements of environmental/earth sciences, as well as developed and coordinated programs focused on these specific fields.I also worked as a Community Programs Analyst for the City of Hamilton, within their waste management industry. In this position, I was responsible for managing the City of Hamilton’s waste management social media accounts, develop, plan, and execute programming for community members, supervise and educate tenants on sustainable waste programs and developments, perform research, analysis, and data collection for specific programming, and engaging with members of the public. This opportunity gave me first-hand experience working within a public sector and enhanced my supervision, leadership, and communication skills. My quality within this position showed through the four-month period of my co-op placement, as I received an excellent review from my employers.
