Operations Manager, Hydroprocessing Catalysts
Hydroprocessing Catalyst Operations Lead
Supporting ART Hydroprocessing Catalyst production at the Grace facility in Baltimore, MD.
Operations Planner, Em
Operations Planner for Hydrogel and Granular production within the Silicas Business- Plan and coordinate execution of silica hydrogel and granular production- Support Operations Supervisors in their daily tasks- Verify daily SAP transactions and correct errors- Post daily production in SAP and perform various material movements- Monitor downstream MRP control boards to plan forward production of Hydrogel- Backfill Hydrogel Production Engineer (entire duration of position).
Hydroprocessing Catalyst Operations Lead
As the expansion project completed, I became the Area Operations Lead for the new units (one Alumina, one Hydroprocessing Catalyst) reporting to the Operations Manager.
Commissioning And Start-Up Lead
Continuation role from previous engineering position on the project. As the first unit went into start-up, I moved into this role. I worked with Grace Process Technology and the Commissioning/Start Up Manager to generate trial plans, handover criteria, and other logistics around start up. In start-up I executed on these plans as the enginerr on shift, as well as directing off shifts on how to proceed. Within 75 hours and under 200MT of production, , the first unit was online in-quality and ready for hand over to operations. For the second unit, I did the same roles against, applying what I'd learned in the first iteration to this larger unit. I trained operators on various production unit operations. I also worked on shift to bring catalyst properties into spec. I monitored daily raw material and utility usages, while providing summaries to accounting. I also tracked and maintained our production for reporting through the project chain to track our start-up timeline progress.During Start-up I worked heavily on the Honeywell Experion system to finish configurations and add additional functionality to processes as needed. Minor calculations all the way up through adjusting unit procedures.
Commissioning And Start Up Engineer
Served as the sole commissioning and start up engineer for Grace's hydroprocesing catalyst expansion project in Lake Charles, LA. In addition, also served a Process Engineering role to help advise solutions to engineering issues and RFIs. - Generated commissioning procedures- Went on system walkdowns, generated A/B/C punchlist items. - Coordinated vendors for commissioning/start-up of equipment- Wrote SOPs for each unit operation- Worked with site operations to receive the handover of utilities and other subareas of the expansion- Designed and/or refined the control scheme, attended FAT/SATs for 3 batch operations within the new units in Honeywell Experion.
Hydroprocessing Catalyst Process Technologist
In process technology, I worked with Grace Hydroprocessing Catalyst plants located in North America to begin developing critical process metrics for Fixed and Ebullating Bed catalyst production. This work entailed review of in-plant historical operating data, matching to downstream process results, then developing parameter ranges and deviation plans for individual catalyst grades. The frame work that was started here has continued to evolve into a robust SPC process for all Hydroprocessing catalysts within Grace. In addition to the SPC documents, I also worked with manufacturing units on specific project assignments.- Process review and capability study for the treatment and disposal process for an ammoniated slurry byproduct.- Review of lab test methodology for catalyst product length including a Gage R&R. I also revised the testing methodology to reduce variation across operators for generating test samples.- Support engineer for new-to-location production of a hydroprocessing catalyst grade. This work involved guiding decision making from my prior experience of making the catalyst in a different operating unit.
Plant Foreman
I oversaw the operation of a 50MT GMP Silica plant by managing the safety and performance of 15-25 chemical operators and taking significant ownership to ensure the continued accomplishment of plant financial objectives. My key accountabilities included;• Upholding plant safety by encouraging safe work practices including the strict management and overhaul of LOTO procedures, championing Grace's "Safe Summer" initiative, responding and resolving safety concerns and incidents, and advising on plant safety improvements.• Achieving plant financial goals by tracking plant uptime, coordinating product manufacturing schedules, assuring product quality, and reducing product rework and scrap generation• Provide training, coaching, and discipline to employees both on the plant floor and in group meetings• Coordinate between Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Sales to maximize effective operation of the facilityPersonally, I focused on;• Pushing for root cause solutions to solve problems with equipment and procedures. Specifically, the start up and operation of a variety of dryers and product packers.• Developing employees to maintain safe productivity throughout the shift. Under my management, product changeover time for my shift dropped 20% yielding more productivity and uptime.• Supporting operations with detailed feedback on issues, troubleshooting, process changes, and experimental work. This feedback allowed engineers to achieve high-value process improvement goals. This role within Operations offered me detailed knowledge of the day-to-day operation of chemical plants. I have observed the impacts of various financial and performance initiatives on plant manufacturing. My emphasis on safety has been reinforced, and my supervisory skills have continued to be developed.
Process Engineer For Alumina And Hydroprocessing Catalyst
This was a solutions driven role that aimed to streamline and improve plant operations and yield for a 70MT Alumina plant and a 55MT Hydroprocessing Catalyst (HPC) plant.Key projects included:• Plant coordination and research for a new product deployment in Alumina. The project resulted in increased production over 20% while tightening product quality. This work required coordinating R&D initiatives with Operation requirements, Sales goals, and Capital investment. During the course of this project I developed and deployed the product beyond the plant in Lake Charles to other Grace sites worldwide.• Deriving accurate accounting of raw material variance and production volume between the two plants to minimize yield loss and solidify production reporting• In-depth analysis of re-milling within HPC to decrease warehouse storage of rework material and increase production output. This work increased milling by 6% without any capital investment.• Performed monthly auditing of procedures and root cause investigation of safety incidents to support the site's commitment as an OSHA Star VPP certified facility helping to earn the site a "Best in Louisiana" award for safety. This opening role out of college expanded my knowledge of plant Operations. Specifically in my work during the product deployment, I interfaced with a majority of departments within Grace in order to achieve innovative success for the company. This position allowed me to apply my engineering skills and achieve measurable results I can be proud of.
Intramural Athletic Supervisor
Here, I supervised and coordinated participants and employees (referees and scorekeepers) at multiple locations for intramural sports events. This includes promoting participant sports safety, scheduling games and tournaments, enforcing program rules and guidelines, and maintaining a positive atmosphere for all participants. I led strong improvement initiatives in the department focused on simplifying and refining rules for multiple sports, worked directly to mentor referees and develop their worth to the program, and promoted the organization through multiple social events.
Computer Science Teaching Assistant
Research Assistant
I was a system administrator and developer for software testing suites on multiple DoD projects. These tests allowed engineers to deliver well-tested project deliverables with minimized overlap and redesign of project implementation. I also worked as a lab chemist working on various projects to support the Dept. of Homeland security and the TSA. I worked to gather data in lab by designing and conducting my own experiments. I also held a role in project integration to help integrate software solutions with chemists.
