Development and fabrication of GaN HEMT MMICs., Plasma Etch, and Deposition

Program: NASA Space GrantResearch Advisor: Charles C. Hays Ph.DProject: High-Throughput Electrochemical Characterization of Nanostructured Thin Films• Work supported four Department of Energy (DOE) projects• Performed extensive data analysis, documentation and reporting• Sputtered nanostructured thin film catalysts using a DC Magnetron two gun planer sputter system and a three gun combinatorial sputter system• Determined catalyst microstructure grain size and compositions using an FEI Nova NanoSEM 600 Scanning Electron Microscope/EDS• Measured magnetic properties of catalyst using a LakeShore 7300 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer• Measured film thicknesses with a Veeco DekTak 3 Profilometer• Prepared powdered catalyst inks, investigated drying effects, anddetermined uniformity using a Zeiss Axiovert 40 MAT Microscope• Electrochemically deposited catalyst onto substrates• Performed electrochemical measurements using a novel multi-electrode system, and a rotating disk electrode (experiments conducted include: CV, ORR, MOR, and CO Stripping)• Setup and integrated test equipment and electronics• Modified electrical connections for catalyst samples for increasedconductivity and durability

Hays Ph.DProject: Characterize Performance of Nano-Structured, Transition Metal Based, Thin Films for use as a Catalyst in Fuel Cells.• Integrated a high-throughput Keithley DMM/Switch and multiplexer card for multi-electrode system• Wrote software in Lua scripting language, and LabVIEW for dataacquisition system• Designed and soldered, new wiring harness and resistor box forexperiment• Performed electrochemical measurement on catalysts
