Profile bio

About Maxwell Johnson

My background spans across the clinical, pharmaceutical, academic, and startup sectors and has given me a nuanced view of the pipeline for translational medicine. After transferring from Berkeley City College in 2022, I received my BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a Neurobiology concentration from UC Berkeley in May, 2024. I have since begun my graduate studies in the Rubinsky lab through the UCSF-UC Berkeley joint Bioengineering PhD program. My research focuses on applying the Rubinsky lab’s isochoric cryopreservation techniques to brain tissue and cultured neural networks to induce a state of suspended animation for both short and long-term cryopreservation without damaging the tissue or altering function. I also lead the Rubinsky lab’s newest research pillar — The Development of Wearable Diagnostic Systems — where I oversee the development of a system which I invented that boasts a novel means of rapidly evaluating both cognitive and physical state of a subject through a short exam. I am also the Chair of the Student Leadership Council for the NSF ERC: ATP-Bio, the Membership chair of the Berkeley chapter of the Sigma Xi Honors Research Society, and a UC Berkeley Path to the Professoriate Fellow. I have an extensive background in cancer biology and genetics — spanning across applied clinical genomics through Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital by way of my time with Genomes2People, developing theoretical and computational genomic and karyotypical models of cancer aneuploidy by cell type via my time at Donner Lab at UC Berkeley, and advancing Antibody Drug Conjugate development for cancer treatment through my internship at Catalent Pharma Solutions.I have three years experience as a physicians assistant at Kaiser Permanente, Oakland in the Occupational Medicine department — where I performed patient exams, charted, and learned to optimize the treatment plan around the patient to ensure the most optimal outcome in their recovery journey. Additionally, I have a deep history in the design and prototyping of medical devices for tracking and evaluation of cognitive and physical disorders, and I’m certified by MOCA and an active member of the MDS, where I’m also in the process of certification for diagnostic evaluation. Outside of neurological disorders, I have also led research groups spanning the design of ergonomic and bioinspired lower-limb prostheses, to sEMG systems that rapidly adapt to the wearer’s neuromuscular profile for optimized and personalized nonverbal and sign language communication.DMs are always open :)
