About Mai Vang
Growing up, I was always coming up with new games to get my younger sister to play with me. Every day was a new challenge of tweaking our favorite games to make it feel new, innovative, and alluring. Despite the multiple failures that came along the way, my greatest successes came when I created a new game related to her interests. Little did I know that this passion of creating for others would drive me towards a career in education and development. While teaching, I found joy in breaking down complex information and concepts into approachable, digestible, and engaging lessons for my students. By applying student-centered learning methodologies and a backwards design planning, my students made significant growth in their academic and personal development beyond their peers at school. As a Senior Program Coordinator, I continue developing curriculum, trainings, and lead professional developments for College Access coaches who provide direct support to high school students from low-income backgrounds who are interested in attaining a college degree. I enjoy exploring new approaches to design curriculum materials and trainings that feel relevant and constructive to our students and staff.
Listed skills include Youth Development, Policy Analysis, High School Students, Microsoft Powerpoint, and 17 others.

Literacy Teacher
I founded the K-5 Literacy Summer Camp and developed the reading curriculum focused on bridging African/African-American history and art to reading instruction and helping youth cultivate relationships within their community. Our students collaborated with local artists, including art teachers and dance instructors, to apply their reading skills to painting and stepping. Once a week, students volunteered with Urban Roots Minnesota and planted vegetables at a local community garden in Saint Paul.In this role, I also designed essential workplace protocols for the summer camp including fire, severe weather, shelter-in-place, health and incident reports, missing child, and chaperone expectations. I developed the staff handbook for summer camp workers and facilitated trainings and meetings for our Summer Camp Assistants.
Academic Interventionist
I worked with 36 kindergarten and first-grade students and provide rigorous tier-2 instruction in reading and math. Through weekly data progress monitoring, I developed lesson plans tailored to the academic gaps and misconceptions my students had. I collaborated with educational stakeholders in my school to ensure students' personal and academic goals were at the forefront of the work I was doing.Highlights• First-grade students' average ROI (rate of improvement) was almost 2x higher than the average at 3.2 compared to 1.67 respectively.• 92% of students in Kindergarten and first-grade made progress towards their end-of-year reading and math goals every week.
Teacher
At Prodeo, I taught first-grade for two years and second grade for one year. Many of the students I taught are low-income and/or recently immigrated to the United States within the last 10 years. I utilized Responsive Classroom and ENVoY to manage a classroom of 19-24 first and second grade students. I analyzed student data to restructure my lessons. I collaborated with families and community organizations to support students' academic and personal needs.Highlights• In my first year of teaching, my class made 133% growth from the Fall to Winter trimester on their Math NWEA assessment. By the end of the year, my students made the most growth across first-grade in Math.• In the 2019-2020 academic year, the instructional materials I developed were used in first-grade classrooms to push academic results and scaffolding.
Paraprofessional
I provided classroom instructional assistance and academic interventions in small-groups and one-on-one. Student successes included increased sight-word automaticity, numeracy, and writing complete sentences related to a topic.
Teaching Assistant
I co-taught a ninth and tenth grade English course alongside a retired teacher. I facilitated conversations about the required texts including topics of racism, class, science, literary devices, and building text connections to students' communities. Student successes included students being able analyze and write narratives to explore how racism and classism is present in their communities and the implications of it on their lives.
Intern
I researched information and wrote one-pagers to detail facts pertaining to bills on the floor. I communicated with constituents with other offices to inform them of new bills being developed by my State Representative and noted concerns by constituents to help redevelop bills.Publications included writing the 2017 Senate Joint Resolution 41 into legislation.
Tutor/Mentor
Worked closely with low-income and/or first-generation college students in grades 9-11 by tutoring them in core subjects of algebra, geometry, science, reading, and writing. Planned daily team-building and collaborative learning activities and lessons to promote students' own awareness of individual strength. Facilitated and promoted student-driven conflict-resolution strategies to address disagreements and conflicts. Collaborated with the Resident Hall Director to provide hygiene products for the students we served in the summer program.
