I founded the K-5 Literacy Summer Camp and developed the reading curriculum focused on bridging African/African-American history and art to reading instruction and helping youth cultivate relationships within their community. Our students collaborated with local artists, including art teachers and dance instructors, to apply their reading skills to painting and stepping. Once a week, students volunteered with Urban Roots Minnesota and planted vegetables at a local community garden in Saint Paul.In this role, I also designed essential workplace protocols for the summer camp including fire, severe weather, shelter-in-place, health and incident reports, missing child, and chaperone expectations. I developed the staff handbook for summer camp workers and facilitated trainings and meetings for our Summer Camp Assistants.

I worked with 36 kindergarten and first-grade students and provide rigorous tier-2 instruction in reading and math. Through weekly data progress monitoring, I developed lesson plans tailored to the academic gaps and misconceptions my students had. I collaborated with educational stakeholders in my school to ensure students' personal and academic goals were at the forefront of the work I was doing.Highlights• First-grade students' average ROI (rate of improvement) was almost 2x higher than the average at 3.2 compared to 1.67 respectively.• 92% of students in Kindergarten and first-grade made progress towards their end-of-year reading and math goals every week.

At Prodeo, I taught first-grade for two years and second grade for one year. Many of the students I taught are low-income and/or recently immigrated to the United States within the last 10 years. I utilized Responsive Classroom and ENVoY to manage a classroom of 19-24 first and second grade students. I analyzed student data to restructure my lessons. I collaborated with families and community organizations to support students' academic and personal needs.Highlights• In my first year of teaching, my class made 133% growth from the Fall to Winter trimester on their Math NWEA assessment. By the end of the year, my students made the most growth across first-grade in Math.• In the 2019-2020 academic year, the instructional materials I developed were used in first-grade classrooms to push academic results and scaffolding.

I facilitated conversations about the required texts including topics of racism, class, science, literary devices, and building text connections to students' communities. Student successes included students being able analyze and write narratives to explore how racism and classism is present in their communities and the implications of it on their lives.
