The Trial Unit at the Federal Community Defender Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania provides representation to indigent defendants charged in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with federal offenses. As a Compassionate Release Intern, I: interviewed prospective clients who were incarcerated at federal prison facilities; evaluated prospective clients’ sentences, medical history, and other circumstances; and prepared memoranda on prospective clients’ eligibility for successful compassionate release motions.

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia is dedicated to the defense of indigent clients charged with federal offenses. As a legal extern, I: drafted motions for compassionate release and reply briefs; prepared memoranda on questions of criminal and civil procedure; researched sentencing guidelines, prison conditions, and regulations governing federal prison practices; and drafted appellate briefs and participated in moot arguments.

The Capital Habeas Unit at the Federal Community Defender Office represents incarcerated people who have been sentenced to death in post-conviction proceedings. As a legal extern, I conducted research on a number of legal issues, including Batson claims, federal criminal statutes, Martinez and other ineffective assistance of counsel claims, and judicial recusal. I helped develop and draft habeas petitions and memoranda of law. I also reviewed trial transcripts to identify preserved claims, and I participated in investigatory efforts.

The Death Penalty Information Center is a national non-profit organization serving the media and the public with analysis and information on issues concerning capital punishment. As a legal intern, I: responded to legal developments regarding the administration of capital punishment; and prepared informal and formal research briefs synthesizing case law, legal scholarship, government reports, and legislative developments at the state and federal level.

SAFER Campus is a nonprofit organization committed to enabling student activists with the tools and information they need to prevent sexual assault and interpersonal violence on their campuses. As Research Director, I: conducted research relevant to campus sexual violence, federal policy, and student advocacy in order to develop and disseminate resources to student activists; developed familiarity with federal, state, and local policies and legal resources through extensive research and organization, specifically pertaining to non-discrimination policy in education; adapted research goals to current political developments, most notably launching an initiative to collect and disseminate information regarding the importance of Title IX and how it operates on campuses in response to the Department of Education’s changing position on its enforcement.
