Director, Member Engagement & Education
My role as Director allows me to oversee the execution of all OLA educational events including Super Conference, Annual Institute on the Library as Place, Copyright Symposium, Marketing Think Tank, Digital Odyssey, RA in a Day, Child and Youth Expo, and OCULA conferences.I also engage with our membership through representation on divisional council and committees and through outreach efforts at provincial library schools and programs. Bi-annual meetings with members of The Partnership allow me to engage with library associations from across Canada and to have a holistic view on the efforts being made through library advocacy and education.
Manager, Education Programs
Founded in 1900, the Ontario Library Association is the oldest continually operating library association in Canada. With more than 5,000 members, the OLA is the largest library association in the country. We provide an opportunity for the people in our field to associate, to meet, to share experience and expertise, to create innovative solutions in a constantly changing environment. In my role as Manager, Education Programs I oversee and manage the development, planning, logistics, staffing and evaluation of the following programs: OLA Super Conference (late January) - our annual conference that brings together 4,500-5,000 professionals from libraries as well as the fields of education and publishing. Community Led Think Tank (early Summer) Digital Odyssey (early June)Annual Institute on the Library as Place (early July)Child & Youth Expo (Fall) RA in a Day (Fall) Copyright Symposium (early December) Cataloguing workshops (throughout the year) OCULA Conference (Spring & Fall) I also oversee the Education Institute - an online platform providing professional development to librarians across the country through webinars focusing on a variety of topics. The Education Institute is managed by OLA on behalf of The Partnership, a collaborative group with representation from all of the provincial library associations from across Canada.
Coordinator, Education Institute
The Education Institute is a continuing education program for library information workers developed by The Partnership of Provincial and Territorial Library Associations of Canada. The program offers one-hour audio and web conferences, and 4-6 week online courses. Speakers in the Education Institute are leaders in their fields: knowledgeable, experienced, innovative and widely recognized.Sessions and courses are open to anyone who wishes to participate. Members of the Provincial and Territorial Library Associations, and their affiliates participate at members’ preferred rates.
Programming And Outreach Librarian
A brief sabbatical from OLA allowed me to explore this brand new position at Ryerson University Library. I was thrilled to learn more about the academic sector and how to engage more effectively with faculty, staff and students. Throughout my time here I was able to create and implement a campus wide reading program, support student research showcases, organize several awareness events including a new partnership for voter education, support orientation and alumni events, and engage with the on-campus Early Learning Centre for weekly story times in the Library. The relationships that I developed with Ryerson's Positive Space committee and the Office of Sexual Violence Support and Education allowed me to develop and engage with really meaningful programming and outreach opportunities. Through Drag Story Time, panels supporting transgender children, and a reading program that confronts misogynoir on campus, I've been extremely grateful for the opportunities to make connections with some truly outstanding colleagues.
