I’m fascinated with the English language and how the same message can be conveyed so many different ways, with nuances in word choice, grammar, and sentence structure that have a stunning impact on the receiver of the message. With a proven track record of writing, editing, generating ideas, and designing content, I work tirelessly to improve the clarity, relevance, and organization of my clients' written communication and enhance the way they inform, educate, persuade, and engage their stakeholders.I love conveying complex ideas in a clear, succinct way to make it easier for others to understand and focus on the information they need to execute their jobs and achieve their goals. When given an ineffective, underdeveloped, or convoluted communication piece, I take a two-part approach. Conducting a technical audience analysis, I assess the reader’s knowledge level, motivations, and desired outcome. I quickly drill down to the critical framework and then move into creativity. Seeing patterns, trends, and the pathway to the greatest audience impact, I blend words with visuals and interesting stories that spark engagement and boost professionalism. The secret to my success is that I’m not just a “doer” of writing and editing. While I’m relied upon for composing and editing high-profile messages, I also thrive on idea generation. I love generating ideas for process, organizational, and communication improvement that help streamline, clarify, and make them more efficient. I’m a holistic strategist who connects disparate pieces of a communication puzzle and rearranges them in a creative way that solves a complex problem. Using my strategic thinking and leadership skills, I simultaneously conceptualize plans from a high level and guide others in the tactical execution of the plan.My ultimate goal is to use my professional and academic communication experience to advance the field of strategic communication through both research and application. My research has examined people’s understanding and perceptions of complex issues, including climate change, plastic waste, foodborne illness, and communicable disease. I seek to better understand barriers to engagement and understanding of these and other issues and develop strategies to increase people’s willingness to support related initiatives. I aim to use my research to help nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions, and other communicators of these issues develop more effective messaging that ultimately increases awareness, action, and advocacy.
