About Monica Silkwood
Just because something is different from what you’ve experienced doesn’t make it a bad thing. Sometimes, that “different” can open you up to incredible possibilities and joy.****As the child of immigrant parents and living most of my childhood in Mexico, I’ve been no stranger to feeling different. I spent my high school years in California, trying to fit in despite being segregated in a bilingual program. Even after I was placed in mainstream classes, I still felt like an outsider, like it was always me vs. them. The “them” being all of my peers.What I learned was that advocating for myself and working hard was my way to fit in, and it helped me develop compassion for marginalized people. Because I was one of them.Fast forward to adulthood when I was told there was a good chance my third child would be born with Down Syndrome. Though I felt the medical community expected me to terminate the pregnancy, that was never an option for me. Instead, I became a fierce advocate for my son and anyone with disabilities. Facing something that’s different or scary is an opportunity for learning and growth. Something that many don’t do often enough.Our experiences shape who we are and how we interact with the world around us. I’m thankful to have found a home in Kadabra, an organization that believes in diversity and inclusion and works tirelessly every day to help organizations educate their employees on acceptance and open minds. I’m able to put to use my past work and personal experiences to support the planning, administration and client services at Kadabra and ensure the back engine is running smoothly for our practice leaders and clients.And to be able to do that with an extra dose of compassion and fierce advocacy is never a bad thing.
