Ernst & Young (EY) is a multinational professional services firm that provides audit, consulting, tax, and advisory services to businesses around the world. For several years, EY had offices in Yemen but had withdrawn because of the civil war. In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, where I was living and working, and being a British Citizen, I was forced to leave. Instead of returning to the UK, I opted to move my family to my home country Yemen. Once settled, I contacted the chairman of EY to discuss my employment options and expressed an interest in re-opening an EY office in Yemen. However, due to political sensitivities, it was agreed that I would open an office in my name as a subsidiary of EY, something I could do as a Yemen national.Mohamed Taha Hamood & Co (see above), has now been operating successfully in Yemen for 27 years. However, due to recent political conflicts, EY withdrew again from the country in 2017 and we’ve partnered with Kreston Global. As a correspondent’s firm for EY, we represented companies such as BP, British Gas, BHP, Shell, Exxon, Qatar National Bank and Islamic Bank of Bahrain (to name a few) establish operations in Yemen. We set up the company within the territory, navigating the local environment and constraints and signing contracts on their behalf. We then support expatriated personnel to establish themselves in the country.When the company decides to leave the country, we manage the shutting down of facilities, including bank accounts and taxation so everything is handled correctly.

As a non-executive director for Yemen Group of Contractors & Engineers Ltd, I provided an external and independent perspective to the board of directors, helping the company make strategic decisions and manage risks effectively.I oversaw the company's governance framework to ensure that it operated with the highest levels of ethics and compliance. I monitored the company's financial reporting, audit processes, and risk management to ensure that they met the standards set by regulatory bodies.Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of war with Saudi Arabia, it became increasingly difficult to conduct business. With the ongoing conflict and instability in the country, it became clear that it was no longer viable for the company to continue operating there. We were forced to close the company and leave the country. Despite the challenges, I remain committed to contributing to the business community in the region and am exploring new opportunities to do so.

The World Bank is an international financial institution providing loans, grants, and technical assistance to developing countries to support economic development and poverty reduction efforts. Its mission is to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity.As an International Finance Consultant, I was responsible for achieving the "Doing Business in Yemen" award. The award is issued by the World Bank and assesses and ranks the ease of doingbusiness in different countries around the world. It aimed to provide an objective measure of Yemen’s business regulations covering a variety of factors from the ease of starting a business, getting construction permits, accessing electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency.I undertook a variety of projects on behalf of the World Bank, commissioned by the International Finance Corporation. I was also selected to undergo extensive training as Non-Executive Director.

As a Senior Consultant, I was responsible for writing manuals for the investment department to reflect the changes in accounting and auditing following a restructuring. While completing the assignment in 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and I was forced to leave. I completed the project working from Jordan and Egypt.
