Roles and Responsibilities: •Review the applicant's financial documents, including income statements, credit reports, bank statements, and tax returns.•Confirm the applicant’s employment status and income with employers or other sources.•Assess the applicant's credit history and score to determine creditworthiness.•Calculate the loan-to-value ratio to assess the level of risk involved in lending.•Evaluate the applicant's debt-to-income ratio to ensure they have the ability to repay the loan.•Assess the property’s value (via valuation reports) that is being mortgaged to ensure it meets the lender's criteria.•Ensure that the applicant can afford the mortgage based on their income, debts, and living expenses.•Perform necessary checks to prevent money laundering activities.•Stay updated with changes in mortgage regulations and ensure all underwriting practices comply with current laws•Make informed decisions on whether to approve, decline, or refer the application for further review.•Set specific conditions that the applicant must meet before the mortgage can be approved.•Keep accurate and detailed records of the underwriting process, including the rationale for decisions.•Generate reports summarizing the findings and decisions made during the underwriting process.•Liaise with mortgage advisors and brokers to communicate the status of the application and any additional requirements•Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on best practices, regulatory changes, and market trends.•Identify areas for improvement in the underwriting process to enhance efficiency and accuracy.• Identify and mitigate potential fraud risks by thoroughly reviewing application details and supporting documents. • Address any questions or concerns from applicants or brokers throughout the underwriting process.•Mentor junior underwriters, providing guidance on complex cases and helping to enhance their skills and knowledge
