Investigative Reporter
As the newsroom’s only investigative reporter, I developed award-winning enterprise stories in Rochester and greater Minnesota on a range of topics from health care to school shootings. I simultaneously produced quick-turn accountability stories, substantive explainers, breaking news and longer-term investigations. I generated story ideas, cultivated and interviewed sources, filed data practices requests, analyzed data, wrote stories and designed graphics.Specific stories include:- Mayo Clinic charity care: A six-story series on Mayo’s financial assistance program and its lawsuits against indebted patients who could have qualified for aid. Following publication, Minnesota lawmakers passed legislation prohibiting hospitals from suing patients or sending to collections unless they could determine that they patients were ineligible for aid and Attorney General Keith Ellison is looking into Mayo’s billing and collection practices. My reporting was highlighted by MPR News during an on-air interview and earned AHCJ's first place investigative (small division) award.- Crisis pregnancy centers: I held the Minnesota Department of Health accountable for funding anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers that promote “abortion pill reversal,” and other dangerous misinformation. Lawmakers have since proposed a bill that would more strictly regulate CPCs that receive state funds.- Jury representation: I discovered that the Minnesota court system has done little to address the systemic issues in the jury selection process that lead to all-white juries even though they acknowledged the issue as far back as the 1990s. My reporting inspired our local chief judge to issue the first-ever “corrective action” to improve the jury selection process and make it more equitable.
