With over 14 years of experience in the restaurant and tech industries, I am passionate about creating innovative solutions that empower local restaurants and connect them with loyal customers. As the CEO and co-founder of inKind, I lead the largest local restaurant marketplace in the country, offering the best financing to restaurants and enabling them to attract high spend guests. I believe in supporting independent restaurant operators and helping them thrive in a competitive and challenging environment. In addition to my role at inKind, I am also a restaurant owner and investor. I opened Ember, a live fire restaurant, in 2023 to showcase the benefits of using inKind financing and landlord funding instead of investors or debt. I also use Ember as a testing ground for new partnerships, products, and technologies that I can recommend to the 1200+ restaurants in the inKind network.Through my family office, I have invested in over 30 restaurants, dozens of early stage tech companies, and a few real estate projects. I love supporting entrepreneurs and being as helpful as possible to their growth and success.

Restaurant OwnerEmber Restaurant Feb 2023 - PresentEmber is a live fire restaurant, featuring the first Josper oven in Austin. We opened it to prove that a restaurant can open with just inKind and landlord funding instead investors or debt enabling the operators and staff could keep the profits of the restaurants. We also use Ember for testing partnerships with inKind which we can then recommend to our 800+ restaurants in the inKind network. This could include technology, purchasing, marketing, and products for restaurants.Ember also gives an opportunity for inKind's 70 employees in Austin to "own" a restaurant and appreciate the difficulties that independent restaurant operators experience. This enables inKind to develop products to better support our restaurant partners. -
Managing DirectorFirefly, Llc Jan 2010 - PresentThis is my personal investment fund. Through it, I've invested in over 30 restaurants, dozens of early stage tech companies, and a few real-estate projects. I love investing in very early stage companies and then trying to be as helpful as possible to those companies. If you're based in Austin and starting a tech company or restaurant, I'd love to grab a cup of coffee.

We give chefs a restaurant for 3-6 months where they can try out different menu items, market themselves, hire a team, raise capital and eventually open somewhere else in DC.We also host 1-5 day events where chefs that don't want to open a restaurant, but want to try something new can do a pop-up.We also have a permanent cocktail bar, outdoor patio, and host a lot of private events for political causes, startups, and established companies like Facebook, Adobe, and Uber. -
Ceo And Co-FounderEquityeats May 2014 - Oct 2016Washington, Dc, UsCEO and co-founder of EquityEats, the first equity based crowdfunding platform for restaurants. Johann's friend Steve went into a bar that Johann had invested in and said that he wanted to be able to invest in a bar, but that he wasn't an accredited investor. Andy, a lawyer, worked with the DC government and got permission for them to perform the first equity based crowdfunding for a restaurant in the country. It was limited to DC investors only and they raised over $400k from hundreds of investors.EquityEats then went on to help other restaurants raise capital through equity and debt investors in several states. The founders learned that equity crowdfunding for restaurants was not a great idea. Restaurants, as an asset class, are not the best investments and that there was a better way to finance restaurants. From that inKind was born. -
