Marketing Coordinator
After finishing my last job I moved into a short term consultative role to help the then Community Mutual Group re-brand themselves as Regional Australia Bank. It was an exciting time to work with Regional Australia Bank as the shift in brand provided the opportunity to redefine who the bank was to the market.During this process I rolled out all the digital assets and provided advice on how best to manage them under the new brand, liaised with senior members of staff on everything from the new website development, to naming conventions of brand assets like the smartphone apps and blog. For a person who loves branding, the ability to take an established business and help it finds its feet under a new banner was a dream come true. From working with the marketing team, to standing outside on a cold Armidale day waiting for a coffee from the coffee van, I enjoyed every minute of working with Regional Australia Bank. In fact, we were so impressed with their personal approach that we now bank with them for our business!
Director Of New Business Development
Seo Consultant
In the digital age we need digital understanding. I took a job consulting with digital industry businesses about developing white label SEO opportunities with their existing client base. This had a twofold benefit. I was exposed to account management and SEO simultaneously. During my time with SEO Resellers Australia I was responsible for identifying, recruiting, and maintaining partner agencies to provide our white label services within their suite of offerings. I managed agency expectations and monitored the growth of our partners businesses by working with them to offer SEO as a new service and attract a more diversified client base, or offer new services to existing clients. As stated I was also exposed to SEO and got the opportunity to sink my teeth into this important aspect of the commercial digital footprint. To this day I apply the knowledge I gained about SEO from my time as a consultant at SEO Resellers Australia.
Assistant Trader
At this juncture took my big plunge into commodities trading, futures, and understanding the economic and logistical realities of how the world is fed. Welcome to Grain trading.PentAG Nidera was an excellent company to grow in. I was welcomed in and given transparent access to the whole company. Any question I had was answered and explained with depth, I got to sit in Board meetings, manage trading simulations, and tag along to broker dinners (Hint: they were very fun). All that was just value add though. Within my 'day job' I learned things like:How to handle procedural requirements for export. I dare anyone to liaise with the Filipino Consulate on export licensing requirements and come out unscathed! How to audit, interpret, and form opinions on data. From producing position reports to forming opinions on market movements. I got full exposure to data management and interpretation. How to identify and develop arbitrage opportunities. I got to trade, form trade strategies, and apply opportunities I identified to grow the profit potential on a trade. This is where my time at SLL (see below) really helped me. Understanding what it takes to identify opportunities and successfully implement them to see realised profit is an incredible skill to have in business.Beyond all of this though, I learned how the world gets fed. The network of shipping routes that criss-cross around the world to turn Australian hard wheat into Japanese soba noodles, or 97% of American sorghum into Chinese food will never cease to amaze me. I'm fascinated by the fact that a frost in Russia (that damages crops) can have global implications on the foreign exchange rates and affect things like the cost of your holiday from Australia to the UK. We truly are a global society and understanding the economic landscape and the factors that make it shift underneath us is an asset I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Trainee Solicitor
If you have followed on from my job below you will see that I loved branding and marketing. However, no well rounded brain can ignore the lure of some good old fashioned logical, analytical, left brain nourishment; herein lies my foray into law. Now to be perfectly clear I am not of the view that the legal profession is a creatively devoid industry. Often it is anything but, however at my stage of the legal career [read entry] only the best matters are reserved for you. The one's that involve costing files, running lump sum hearing loss claims, and helping with small town, small time misdemeanors. At this stage of a legal career you operate under the differed compensation system. That is, you work hard for your entry level package with the promise of one day being the top dog. If you aren't familiar with the labour economics of the professions you should google it, it is a fascinating insight. I don't mean to bash it though, the benefit of the deferred compensation system is that, like me, you will be (and I actually mean this sincerely) gifted the opportunity to learn the value of what effort it takes to make money both on a personal and commercial level. costing files and folio's, 6 minute units and time-sheets teach you what goes into turning a profit for your efforts.I learned some great lessons in my time at SLL and am in touch with the firm and its partners to this day. Running lump-sum hearing losses, compiling affidavits, researching and drafting legal advice, and assisting the masterful in mediation gave me the foundation that I build my work ethic off today.
Merchandiser
The entry level job. You know the one - a big company but a small role, you've got the world at your feet and the sky is the limit. Some people hate their first job, but not me! I was paid to sell beer of all things! That's not really work at all.The dressed up version of what I did was branding and marketing merchandising. Peel off the entry level gloss and you would see that for what it was. I hung a lot of bunting at pubs, restocked bottle shop floors, and perhaps most excitingly pulled bar and bottle shop fridges contents apart and completely, meticulously refilled them with the optimal labels in the optimal position to reduce your effort to choose our product! Yep, we really go to those efforts folks. But hey, that's how you learn the fundamentals of branding.I also got to liaise with clients, build relationships, and manage orders all while driving myself into the annals of Gold Coast history. Yep, I'm a walking archive of every bottle shop, lunch pit stop and best pub spot that's on the Gold Coast... Well at least that was during the years of 2007-2009.
