During my summer internship at ECG, I became familiar with some of the most complex aspects of an academic medical center (AMC): strategic planning that incorporates the three-part mission, physician compensation planning and benchmarking, and financial modeling for graduate medical education budgeting purposes. In addition to client work, my major summer project was to create a comprehensive data source on allopathic AMC organizations for ECG. My goal was to determine the level of affiliation between schools of medicine and associated health systems by researching the agreed-upon governance structure, funds flow methodologies, and other legal requirements that defined the relationship between the two components. Upon completion of my research, I had created a comprehensive spreadsheet that illustrated academic affiliations by their level of alignment and I presented my findings and analysis to the entire national ECG firm.

Iowa City, Iowa Area

I worked on a cross-functional team to consult with a service line department at UIHC that was experiencing declining patient satisfaction scores (despite excellent quality of care) and inefficient patient-throughput in clinic. Through extensive research and analytical work, we made recommendations to the group of clinicians and administrators that will increase patient velocity through the clinic, expected to result in higher revenues and increased patient satisfaction. We also made recommendations surrounding communication and team-work in the clinic to boost morale and increase job satisfaction for all team members of the service line.

At the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, I worked on the provider side of healthcare for the first time, as an administrative intern. One of my main roles was identifying and keeping a master list of patients who may qualify for external assistance in paying for chemotherapy treatment. I also put my Epic experience to use in updating reports and suggesting system updates to help the cancer center meet NAPBC and CoC accreditation requirements.

At MedTouch, I learned a new side of the business of healthcare – marketing and outreach. I managed the business relationship for five client accounts (hospitals and health systems) by strategizing actions to grow KPI’s and strengthen hospital relationships with their communities. I strongly believe healthcare needs to be more accessible, and I was able to put this into practice by working with my clients to promote patient-driven healthcare. I collaborated with marketing and service line-specific departments to identify and promote top hospital service lines and improve the patient experience by leading website restructure projects, targeted ad campaigns, and deliberate content marketing. These efforts led to increased traffic on client sites and increased conversions from website, ad, and social media content.

Madison, Wisconsin Area

As a Project Manager/Implementation Specialist at Epic, I experienced the complexities of healthcare IT and EHR project management. This role introduced me to healthcare and my time at Epic solidified my strong passion for the industry. I spent most of my time managing the implementation of the claims application of Epic software at two large health systems. I facilitated meetings, presented to large panels on the scope of the software, traveled and worked on-site multiple times per month, responded to customer needs quickly, and worked with hospital staff of all technological skill levels. After gaining some experience, I became a mentor to new employees on the claims team.I was also responsible for the testing phase of the implementation at two health systems. This is a highly-integrated risk area that necessitated managing participation and gaining buy-in from all project members of the hospital as well as hospital leadership. I quickly learned to “smell smoke” if the success of either project was in jeopardy. My unique experience of managing the phase at two organizations enabled me to become a testing adviser to Epic employees on other hospital and health system implementations.

During my internship in the External Communications department at Thomson Reuters, I became well-versed in the inner-workings of corporate communication and public relations. Each week, I composed articles and social media posts on relevant legal news to drive traffic to the company blog, “Legal Current.” I also conducted interviews, wrote scripts, and co-hosted monthly podcasts for the public on pertinent legal topics.When my summer internship came to an end, I was asked to continue working remotely as an independent contractor through my last year of college. I continued the duties of my internship in addition to drafting and editing multiple press releases and the Corporate Responsibility Report before distribution to local media channels.

As an intern in the HR department at Best Buy, I facilitated a variety of tasks for the company – most notably, taking the lead in planning a corporate event, Take a Child to Work Day, resulting in over 600 attendees. I also wrote and edited many internal communications for the enterprise website and in-store magazine, “The Link,” to educate employees about benefits and upcoming events. In this role, I honed my written communication and time and people management skills.
