About Polo Camacho, Phd

As Bioethicist and Ethics Program Manager at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), I work with my colleagues in the Center for Equity Diversity and Inclusion (CEDI) to support cancer professionals in addressing ethical issues that arise in the cancer care continuum. Previously, I supported hospital ethics committees (HEC’s) through educational programming, co-led a bi-state initiative aimed at translating patient preferences into actionable medical orders, and led workshops on advance care planning at community-based organizations and hospital settings.In 2021, I earned my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Armin Schulz. My dissertation reappraised the epistemological, practical, and bioethical merits of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology. My background is in the philosophy of science and biomedical ethics—my aim currently is to understand the nature of colonial oppression and its impact on the patient-provider relationship, healthcare, and medical science generally. From 2016-2018, I was the Integrated Arts and Research Initiative (IARI) Graduate Research Fellow at the Spencer Museum of Art, where I conducted independent research and applied considerations from the philosophy of biology to the arts. Together with Stephen Goddard, I helped organize an art exhibition, called 'Big Botany', that explored various topics in the plant sciences, including biodiversity, genetics, morphology, ecology, developmental/evolutionary biology, and botany. In conjunction with this exhibition, I also organized a symposium on the topic of plant science and ecology featuring artists, scientists, and philosophers.
