About Mitch Silverstein
Coastal & environmental policy advocate with 10+ years of management experience. Surfrider Foundation's San Diego County Policy Manager. Before that, I served as San Diego County Chapter Manager for 3.5 years. And before that, I volunteered. I served as Vice Chair of the SD Chapter's Executive Committee ("chapter" version of Board of Directors), and also led the Rise Above Plastics (RAP) program. I've worked my way up from an entry-level position in almost every job I've had. In the case of Surfrider, I proved myself as a volunteer by contributing professional quality work for 3 years while holding down 2 jobs. As an activist, I cut my teeth working on plastic pollution advocacy with fellow volunteers and environmental professionals. I now consider myself an expert in the field, and continue to support our chapter's local plastic reduction campaigns. In my policy role, my main focus is on the preservation of our coastal resources in the face of rising seas; this includes fighting for equitable beach access for all people in San Diego, both present and future generations. I also work on clean water issues, and support in several other areas where our coast & the climate crisis intersect (which are many). When I left retail management in 2015, I decided to live, work & play in a way that corresponds with my environmental ethos. Despite a substantial pay cut & an uncertain future, I consider it a great privilege to serve as a voice for our ocean, beaches, and planet. And in my current role, nothing is more rewarding than supporting others who wish to do the same.
