About Matthew Swift
Initially graduating as a Design Engineer from the University of Bournemouth, I have taken a broad approach to developing my engineering career beginning with the graduate development program at Cobham plc before completing an MSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. This led to 2 years at JLR as a Lead Engineer, focusing on developing new systems for emerging products in the Air Induction Team before transferring across to academia as Technology Officer for WMG where I held a leadership position in the HVMC’s hydrogen and skills development programmes. Most recently, I joined Reaction Engines in October 2022 where I now lead the product development of our hydrogen heat exchangers.
Listed skills include Solidworks, Rapid Prototyping, Additive Manufacturing, Cad, and 28 others.

Product Development Lead
CurrentMember of mid-senior engineering leadership overseeing a multifaceted engineering team working across multiple high value, low TRL developmental projects with ATI and/or Clean Aviation geared funding. The key objective of this role is to drive the development of hydrogen heat exchangers for multiple sectors in line with the deliverables and objectives of the consortium-based projects that were part funding them. This involved working closely with Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, Aciturri, Pipistrel, and other OEMs and Tier 1 aerospace companies to enable aligned products to their requirements and strategic direction. Additionally, the role required the generation, update, and dissemination of the product strategy throughout the business from technician to CEO level as well as being a key resource present at a range of events, presenting to a range of audiences from the general public to the Duke of Edinburgh.
Interim Senior Technology Officer
As STO at WMG I provided strategic and project based inputs both internally to WMG as well as externally into the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, working closely with the CTO and CEO. This included managing the portfolio of Catapult funded projects underway at WMG as well as our contributions to the Technology Forums and Working Groups - collaborative cross-HVMC teams aimed at developing specific areas of technology and manufacturing within the U.K.. Regular duties included chairing and managing meeting schedules, ensuring completion of reporting, budgetary compliance, and bi-directional communication.I was further responsible for managing the HVMC collaborative budget during my time in this role of ~£3m.
Technology Officer
My role as the Technology Officer within the Technology Team at WMG was a varied one. My time was split roughly equally between High Value Manufacturing Catapult work and internal WMG projects. For the HVMC I oversaw the contributions and budgets for the Technology Forums that we have representation on, as well as sitting on two of those Forums myself. I was also the lead contributor for one of four work packages within the Legacy Systems Large Transformational Project which aimed to increase the uptake of automation and digitalisation within UK Manufacturing, in particular focusing on SMEs.For WMG internally I led the project management and organisation of our input to the ISCF Wave 3 Manufacturing Made Smarter funding call as well as the Driving Electric Revolution Fast Start programme. As a part of the Technology Team I also provided internal support to the WMG researchers and SME community as required.
Hvmc Workforce Development Programme Manager
Additional role for HVMC Core to run the programme management for the Workforce Development and Skills work being done therein. My part in this is to focus on the industrial element of this programme, collaborating with industrial bodies, manufacturers and educators to ensure smooth deployment of next generation training.
Lead Engineer
As lead engineer in the Air Induction System team I was responsible for overseeing the design, development and simulated testing of the AIS components for future model year (22MY onwards) JLR ICE vehicles. This was achieved through the management of internal and agency CAD, CAE and support function resource to ensure that parts were designed in accordance with JLR Design Rules, passed the required simulations for pressure loss and rise over ambient, were able to be manufactured, and packaged within the available space in the car underbonnet environment.

Freelancer
MPSwift Design is the working title for a new student design consultancy which I have set up for my placement year to then be continued into final year and beyond. The initial plan behind the business is to contact existing design businesses and to pitch to take on pieces of work which they have sidelined due to the work not being critical enough to justify the use of the company's resources but which still need to be completed.
