Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Collected and processed 24 peat cores from 6 different salt marsh sites for carbon content and isotopic dating analysis. The goal was to quantify the growth rates and carbon storage capacity of recently restored salt marshes in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts. The focus was on marsh sites that have been restored over the last eleven years. "Restored" means the restrictions (i.e. under-sized culverts or collapsed bridges, etc.) were rebuilt to allow the tidal flow to be as it used to be. Four cores were taken at each site; two in the natural side and two in the restored side separated by the restriction. This study was in collaboration with the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Marine Biology Laboratory focusing on the initiative to bring blue carbon research to the private sector. I gained experience with field sample extracts including coring and pore water sampling. Additionally, I received organizational skills through maintaining accurate records of all equipment and data measurements throughout the processing of samples. In the lab, I performed container decontamination procedures, used freeze dryers for water removal, homogenized samples for gamma counting, and ball milled and weighed out milligram size samples for the Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen (CHN) Mass Spectrometer to measure carbon content. The research is on-going and was less than a quarter completed during my tenure with the USGS. At the end of my internship I presented a short 20-25 minute presentation to my USGS co-workers about the research I conducted and what we had learned so far.

As a Surface Logger, also known as a Mud Logger, I sampled drill cuttings at specific footage intervals and tested them under a microscope to determine the percent lithology and inclusions. Additionally, I monitored gas in the drilling fluid and flow rate to warn the rig crew of potential blowouts. Sample descriptions, total gas and chromatograph data, and drilling status were recorded on vertical and horizontal logs. A good understanding of the drilling operation was essential to performing my job at a high level. Additionally, good communication with the Company Man, Geologist, and other rig personnel was key to maintaining a safe and productive operation.

Processed rock core samples down to dust particles. Included HCl washing, high temperature cooking, CBD treatment, and silica removal under a microscope.

Tutored Mathematics up to College Algebra, Chemistry I & II, and English I & II. As a Supplemental Instructor I attended class time, then organized and lead after-class study groups for Intermediate Algebra.
