I wrote information memos, background papers, and briefing checklists on maritime shipping and longshore labor for Department of State principals at the Assistant Secretary level.I conducted original research into the dynamic environmental and geopolitical factors affecting maritime trade on Arctic shipping routes, and briefed my Deputy Assistant Secretary on the potential utilization of the high north for inter-ocean shipping. My time in EB/TRA/OTP was marked by global developments surrounding the Panama Canal, Suez Canal, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Black Sea.My policy analysis was not all reactive; much of it was also forward looking, incorporating the IMO vision for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Decarbonization of the maritime shipping fleet - methanol as a stepping stone to green hydrogen and ammonia - is an area of personal interest.I have a deep understanding of the interplay between UNCLOS and the new BBNJ treaty, and have closely followed developments in the International Seabed Authority's Mining Code since the triggering of the two-year rule in 2021 by Nauru Ocean Minerals Inc.
