Senior Principal Engineer - Cybersecurity & It
Director Of Engineering
The first full time software engineer at Harmony Labs and built a fully-staffed, effective engineering and data science organization capable of producing impactful, novel insights into our media ecosystems and the narratives they produce or amplify. - Led efforts to take nearly 200 terabytes of data critical to our mission, donated by various companies, ranging from nearly all broadcast television closed captions since 2012, song lyrics, content from 200 million individual web pages, and television, streaming, and online consumption data from 300,000 compensated individuals in the US. - Designed and implemented continuous integration and delivery systems, building best practices- Processed data using Python and Golang applications running in Elastic Kubernetes Service into a resource that enables the production of public projects such as narrativeobservatory.org and in-depth audience and media analyses for advocacy and social good organizations.- Used new AWS products such as DataBrew and Glue as low-code alternatives to complex custom applications.- Led implementation of data storage and query using a combination of RDS Aurora, Athena, and Elasticsearch to make all data available to the data science team.- Led and end-to-end, trustless implementation of infrastructure as code and role based access control systems for all AWS and Kubernetes services.
Senior Software Engineer
Engineer on the compute team where we were leading a company-wide transition to Kubernetes as part of a multi-cloud, multi-region effort. - Designed and implemented a continuous integration and deployment system for Kubernetes from the ground up. Within a year this system had already successfully executed over 1 million deployments across 50+ application teams.- Developed Kubernetes best practices for application teams and enforced those through our CI systems. - Designed and implemented a globally replicated deployment artifact storage system for Docker containers, Helm Charts, and Kubernetes manifests to support simultaneous global, cross-cloud software deployments. - Helped design an internal incident monitoring and management system that was eventually released as a public-facing feature. - Collaborated with engineers from Google, IBM, and many other companies on the early development of Istio, adding new Datadog and Kubernetes-specific capabilities to Spinnaker, and numerous contributions to community Helm charts.- Designed a globally replicated, eventually consistent software architecture using internal APIs and user locale to alert only affected customers of active service interruptions.
Senior Software Engineer
Implemented and maintained multiple projects on the digital platform supporting Hillary For America using Python, Ansible, Postgresql, Elasticsearch, SNS, and SQS. In particular I owned or helped develop services for: - payment processing- grassroots event organizing- peer-to-peer fundraising- The backend for of our administrative interface- Our tenant management system- An event-driven rule engine- User management- The API gateway through which all requests were routed- A pluggable, generalized webhook processing system. Helped design and did some development for our asynchronous event pipeline used across services. Altogether these systems handled roughly 9 million donations, 36 million supporter signups, 2 million event RSVPs, 60 million transactional emails, and 3 million active user accounts.Worked with a portion of the team that consulted for a large Adtech company. Of particular note, I designed and built an event processing service that constantly processed tens of thousands of events per second from kafka and safely updated a user database based on the content of these events. This service was written in Go and became a vital part of our client’s data processing architecture. In this project we also added a much higher level of service monitoring and insight than our client had in any existing software.
Senior Software Engineer
Led the site reliability team in pinpointing and addressing key failure risks, performance bottlenecks, HIPAA compliance, and security vulnerabilities in a very large Django application and its associated infrastructure needs. My team and I prevented major outages through our work and were the first responders (along with Ops) for any major incident. In addition to my site reliability responsibilities I also worked on key components of our SaaS offering.- Solely responsible for a rewrite of our Twilio SMS integration- Implemented a new Quickbooks Online integration that fit seamlessly into our existing billing and accounting features. - Assisted Ops team in converting from an in-place deployment system using Fabric to immutable deployments using SaltStack and AWS.- Worked with another team lead to develop a new data collection and analysis framework for studies conducted with a partnering medical school. This system met all of the university’s research needs all while remaining HIPAA compliant.
Senior Computer Scientist
Implemented a system for the storage, transfer, retrieval, and processing of large amounts of data using Python, Django, and RabbitMQ and Celery. I was lead developer for a processing architecture to combine the various benefits of MapReduce and more traditional massively parallel, distributed computing. Led the design and development on multiple applications:- A Django web service that included a data cataloging service similar to Data.gov- A high performance petabyte-scale data storage and retrieval system- A data processing and analysis service that was available directly to users through a responsive user interface built on Zurb Foundation. - A system to take data from a computer or network thought to be infected and transfer it in a manner designed to remove the danger of infection on the destination system. This was implemented using a combination Linux utilities and air gaps between data conversion steps. I also worked closely with our DevOps engineer in design and implementation of our infrastructure using various Linux utilities, Bash, and SaltStack. All of these projects involved consulting with customers and users in order to collect feedback and constantly improve the quality of the software and were subject to multiple regulations, notably the Privacy Act of 1974.
Systems Engineer
Worked as a software engineer on one of the simulation teams.- Rewrote major portions of an existing C-130 flight simulator. It was originally written in Ada and we rewrote it in C. - Implemented a simulated combat environment for this simulator. This included flight patterns and attacks, electronic and explosive weapons, with corresponding sensors and countermeasures. All of this information was constantly updated in real time and displayed to the pilot and sensor operators in the simulator cockpit.
Software Engineer
Supported two major projects in the flight simulation division. The first was for a CH-47 cargo helicopter and the second was for a shared simulation environment that could support multiple pilots and high fidelity simulators simultaneously.- Maintained the instructor interface for a CH-47 cargo helicopter simulator using Visual C++ 6.0. This was an older simulator that needed some of the underlying architecture redesigned. - Rewrote a major portion of the database access code. - C++, MySQL, MS Access, and Python. - Solely responsible a software solution to something that has previously been done using expensive, dedicated hardware. - This was integrated into the existing software, resulting in an immediate savings of tens of thousands of dollars and potentially more.- C++, OpenCV, Qt
Software Support Engineer/Build Engineer
- Responsible for investigating and fixing user issues for TestTrack Pro. C++- Maintained the multi-OS build environments for various versions of Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Solaris
Student Technology And Resource Specialist
IT support for all university-funded computer labs and the student laptop lease program.A group of technologically-inclined students (including myself) was hired to support the IT support staff at Morehead State University.- Installed and configured new computers in labs- Performed diagnosis of hardware and software problems in university-supported laptops, including student-owned laptops purchased through the university- Repaired professor's computers and handled sensitive data appropriately
