About Mrunal Shah Md

Empathy, seeking to understand what the other person is feeling. Empathy for the other person creates trust in return. Never has this been more important than now, especially in healthcare. Patients need this with their doctors, doctors need this from their operational partners.Fifty percent of physicians are burned out, can't decide if they want to stay in practice; too many are lost altogether. Burnout is a symptom of a larger problem, not the problem itself. I believe the larger problem is we forget our reasons to be in healthcare. I have made a career out of helping physicians remember and find ways to preserve their connection to purpose even as the healthcare space has gotten harder to do that. Whether it’s increasing pressures of time, technology, process or even changing human behavioral dynamics through shifts in how we live our lives; my career path has given me tremendous opportunities to influence engagement of physicians. My goal has always been to narrow real or perceived gaps between people. The triangle of physicians, patients and healthcare operations has changing distances depending on which angle you look from. My experience is that we are more aligned than it seems, it just requires having the right voices at the right times. Patients expect that we are aligned, and we have a chance to show our trust in each other so patients can have trust in the healthcare environment. That trust then extends to physicians, APPs, pharmacists, nurses, therapists; those that are front facing with patients every day, every hour, every minute; the very goal that healthcare operators want to achieve. If we are going to really change how patients experience healthcare, we need to start with the physicians. My career path has shown me the power of purpose, voice, empathy and compassion and how the more we show that to our physicians, the more they have the capacity to show that to the patients they serve. How do we do that? We start by listening and caring for the physicians, then we coach and teach them to use their voices, and we adjust the healthcare environment to give everyone a voice.I believe healthcare is local, I further believe we make healthcare better one patient/staff/physician interaction at a time. The more of us that can create that space, the better we can make healthcare. My goal is to find as many ways as I can to help be that change.
