A person must possess tenacity, enthusiasm, and strategic thinking to envision a program and facilitate its creation in a way that allows it to last past their tenure. When I arrived at Mills College to a contracted, part-time recycling position with fractured political support and no budget, I knew building a strong foundation for a campus-wide sustainability program required all of these qualities. For seven years, I wove together a multifaceted sustainability program that ranged from student-led programs to innovative operational practices to institutional commitments. The strength of the programs led to inclusion in the College's strategic plan. I advised and engaged students, tracked and reported data to inform practices and progress, implemented policy changes, studied and practiced innovative ways to engage stakeholders, secured creative sources of funding, and more. The sustainability programs were successful because my resourcefulness enabled me to navigate difficult political environments and budget scarcity.By building the value of the program through student engagement and programming, strong costs savings and collaborative curricular and operational partnerships, I left the position as a full time, in-house Sustainability Coordinator with a $20,000 budget.
