About Muhammad Buhari

Fascinated by technologies, I started as a Technician of computer assembly and networking, electrical wiring and then solar pv services design. I obtained MENG in Electrical engineering (funded by ExxonMobil) at Bayero University in Kano, and MSc in Engineering and Entrepreneurship at Nottingham, UK . At this stage, I got interested in planning renewable energy-based power systems (with ‘sustainable’ business ventures in mind), which became the focus of my Ph.D. studies at the University of Manchester, UK. A strategic energy networks planner with NESO, UK, international advisor on integration of Renewables with EM-ONE, Lecturer and Research Leader at Bayero University Kano (BUK). Provided advisory to the Nigerian electricity regulators (NERC), Engineers without Borders (EwB), and the Nigerian integrated Power Projects developers (NIPP). At the BUK Centre for renewable energy research (Deputy Director – Solar); Senior member, Chair for IEEE Smart Village Africa, ex-Chair of the IEEE PES, Nigeria, I spend time providing creative solutions to energy planning issues within complex and uncertain power systems - keeping the lights on from clean sources. I have completed visiting fellowship at Grenoble Institute, France ( 2020) and in (2017) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. These visits led to my participation in several resarch projects such as:• Support partner with University of Exeter, UK to investigate the effect of dust accumulation on PV modules in Nigeria – July 2018 • Partner in the Innovate UK’s Energy Catalyst Round 7 grant of £298k – Dec 2019 (Project No. 41358)• AIRACC Project grant for research on Climate change by French Embassy Nigeria – Dec 2019• UK PACT funded by the UK BEIS - June 2022 (CET/4: E-Source)I also assumed leadership of BUK’s biggest energy projects yet - 1MWp & another 3.5MWp Solar PV Hybrid Systems. I led the Technical team to successful commissioning of the 1MWp & then 3.5MWp Solar power plants through the Solar Nigeria Project (of the DFID, UK) and REA Nigeria, respectively. The project provide the University campuses with electricity 24/7 in addition of 40% savings on energy bills. The two projects make up the largest project of its kind by any Nigerian institution. I had also been involved in the design & installation of numerous (2kWp - 14.4MWp) stand-alone home systems to Minigrids across Nigeria and Africa. My goal is to keep advancing my skill sets, experiences and contribution in future electrical power systems development strategy, projects leadership, and enterprises.

A collaborative project (300k GBP) between Nortech UK, University of Bradford, and Bayero University Kano, brings together academic excellence with industry experience to develop the fundamentals for resolving one of Nigeria's, and other developing countries problem of access to clean, affordable and reliable energy resources. This project will analyse the socio-economic, market and regulatory conditions of the local energy system and identify opportunities for the development of mini-grids and energy community with renewable generation and energy storage systems. The feasibility of using a decision-making tool that takes geographical resources among other things into consideration to assist utilities/other organisations in planning, developing and operating mini-grids in areas where there are high renewable energy resources potential but energy access is unreliable, carbon-intensive or cost-prohibitive.Key findings, recommendations for the development of local energy markets and required changes in Nigeria's regulation frameworks will be presented. Although focused in Nigeria, benefits accrued by the proposed framework will also be suitable for other developing as well as developed countries withidentical or similar challenges.
