My MSc project aims to explore the interaction between diet and gastrointestinal microbiota, and its induction or suppression of an inflammatory response in paediatric patients with Crohn’s disease. Methods include extraction of bacterial metabolites from faecal samples, incubation of metabolites with epithelial and immune cell lines, and the measurement of cytokine production via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

MSc Stratified Medicine and Pharmacological InnovationThis postgraduate taught Masters programme specialises in Stratified Medicine and its application for the creation of safe and efficacious novel disease treatments at reduced costs. Modules featuring in the curriculum include Principles of Pharmacology, Clinical Trials, Pharmacogenomics and Molecular Medicine, Regulation and Governance of New Therapies, Applied Statistics with Routine Health Datasets, Introduction to Biobusiness, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Commercialisation. In addition, a twelve-week placement within the field of Stratified Medicine will take place and a dissertation will be written based on this project. Funding for the course was awarded by the Scottish Funding Council.

Institute of Cancer Sciences: Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research CentreUnder supervision of Dr Joanne Edwards and Dr Jean QuinnUsing the human colorectal cancer cell-line HT29 cells, my Honours project aimed to investigate IL-1bstimulation of the canonical NFkB pathway and its role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer. Through this project, I have become competent in cell culture and maintenance procedures, cytokine stimulation of cells, western blotting, staining western membranes with antibodies, and visualisation of these membranes via enhanced chemiluminescence.

Institute of Cardiovascular and Medicinal Sciences: Gardiner LaboratoryUnder supervision of Professor George Baillie I was involved with numerous projects in Professor George Baillie’s laboratory gaining experience in western blotting, maintenance of various cell lines, ELISA, column purification, Bradford assays, immunoprecipitation, DNA extraction, and chemical transfection. Professor Baillie appreciated my contributions to practical work in the laboratory and also recognised my excellent writing skills. Consequently, I was invited to write a review on the protein phosphodiesterase-4D5 which has been published by the journal Cellular Signalling.

Methods I became competent in include plasmid transformation of E.coli cells, growing transformed cells, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, and plasmid cloning.
