About Ellen Murphy

I teach legal ethics, including Professional Responsibility courses for JD students and Un[A]uthorized Practice of Law courses for nonlawyer professionals. I I have been immersed in online learning since 2008, including as a teacher, administrator, trainer, and student, and I teach in a variety of formats, including online (synchronously and asynchronously), in a traditional classroom setting, and in blended and flipped models. I am a co-author on several legal ethics texts, a member of the NC State Bar Ethics Committee, and a subject-matter expert for the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam. I also serve on the ABA's Standing Committee for the Public Protection in the Provision of Legal Services.I served as Wake Forest Law's first Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives and first Assistant Dean of Instructional Technologies and Design. I was the chief administrative and curricular architect of the school's online Master of Studies in Law, the law school's first fully online degree.A native of Benson, NC, I've a BS in Agribusiness and a Master’s of Education in Instructional Technology from NC State. I am currently studying Agriculture and Food Law at the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville). I am an active board member at Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA), a nonprofit that serves the NC High Country.Prior to joining Wake Forest Law, I was a United States federal appeals court clerk for The Honorable Frank J. Magill, (8th Circuit, Fargo, ND), a corporate lawyer, and the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Lawyer Assistance Program. I am a 2002 graduate of Wake Forest Law, where I was Editor in Chief of the law review.

    Professional Responsibility
    I teach Professional Responsibility, a required JD course which covers fundamental, yet contemporary ethical questions in the practice of law. I teach this course in a range of formats, including synchronously and asynchronously online, in various blended models (including the flipped classroom), and in traditional, residential settings. I also teach the Unauthorized Practice of Law, a required MSL course which explores the extent to which people with legal training, but no license to practice, can use the law, as a social and economic variable, to better manage risk without fear of prosecution or civil liability.
