The highlight of my lengthy career at the City of London Corporation was undoubtedly in the words of John Wilkes "Giving Joy" to 40,000 plus people over 25 years when I conducted the ceremony of the Freedom of the City of London. The great thing about being the Clerk of the Chamberlain's Court and bestowing the Freedom was that everyone was in a good mood, they were excited about taking sheep over London Bridge, the streets of London being paved with gold and tales of Dick Whittington. I also enjoyed accumulating artifacts and memorabilia relating to the Freedom, the Court Room became virtually a museum under my watch. Highlights include the Freedom Caskets of Florence Nightingale, Winston Churchill and General Felix Smith; a marble bust of Wellington; the illuminated copy of freedom of Henry Morton Stanley; a horn of the narwhal; a copy of freedom dating back to 1487 and the sword of the defeated Admiral of the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile.
