Biovecblok S.r.l is a spin-off of the University of Camerino whose goal is to develop new strategies for the control of mosquitoes that spread diseases such as malaria, dengue and Zika. Biovecblok has produced Atlas. Atlas is a powder/pellet, made of colonies of a genetically modified bacterium (harmless for humans), that once released in puddles is able to infect the mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles and Aedes genus, main vectors of malaria, Dengue and the new emergence Zika, decreasing the number and the fitness of the mosquito vector population. Atlas does not kill the mosquitoes, but it strongly affects their biology and consequently their carrier capacity of the etiological agent. Atlas does not target all the mosquitos’ genus but only the ones listed above, resulting completely harmless for all the other species. In terms of ecological impact, under the selective pressure imposed by Atlas, the vulnerable species will be pushed far away from the biocide releasing point, causing the progressive moving from residential areas to ecological niche where the bacterium is not present. Atlas is the result of years of paratransgenic researches performed in the prof. Favia laboratory in the University of Camerino. It all started with the discovery of the effects of a natural molecule on the mosquito physiology.
