Healthscope Limited is a major provider of private hospital services within Australia. Sunnybank Private Hospital is a medium acuity facility with five operating theatres and offering a full range of services including maternity, rehabilitation, surgical and general medical.The position of Finance Manager is responsible for the financial reporting, management of finance and administration staff and contributing to the executive management of the hospital. The Finance Manager ensures timely and accurate reporting in accordance with Healthscope Limited policy and requirements.• Member of the hospital executive comprising General Manager, Director of Nursing and Finance Manager (The Executive team all started at Sunnybank around the same time. Mayne Limited purchased Queensland Medical Laboratory on 1 October 2002. At the time of the sale Queensland Medical Laboratory was the largest private pathology practice in Australia. QML provided pathology services to the healthcare industry in Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory through its network of 27 laboratories and 144 collection centres. In addition to its core pathology activities QML had developed a vaccine distribution business and had begun to develop a clinical trials unit conducting pathology tests for a number of international pharmaceutical companies. QML’s annual turnover was in excess of $190 million and it employed over 2,000 staff. I was approached by the General Manager for Diagnostic Services for Mayne and asked if I would stay on in the Financial Controller role with the added responsibility for Purchasing, Stores and Payroll. • Member of the Executive which comprises the State Manager, Regional Operations Manager, Metropolitan Operations Manager, Business Development Manager, Medical Director and Financial Controller• Member of the integration team which brought about the smooth transition from the Partnership to Mayne• Successful implementation of new purchasing and supply system• Improvement to structure and processes of Payroll Department• Successful integration of accounting system in overall Mayne reporting structureThe Financial Controller is responsible for:• Provision of financial and statutory information for QML management, Mayne Board and external authorities• Liaison with Auditors – Internal, External and Quality• Management of the Finance, Accounts and Payroll Departments• Management of the Property Department• Management of the Purchasing and Supply DepartmentsPrior to acquisition the position was also directly responsible for:• Preparation of statutory accounts and income tax returns• Maintenance of relationships with bank and finance providers

Over the period between 1983 through to the sale of the business to Mayne Health in 2002, QML underwent considerable growth to become the largest privately owned pathology laboratory in the southern hemisphere with a network of laboratories accross three states and employing over 2,000 staff. The role I held grew with the practice and added significantly to that growth through the provision of high quality budgets, management reports and sound management of all financial functions.
