Worked in two different centres as an Animal Care Assistant. Worked with cats, dogs, reptiles, birds and small mammals. Daily tasks included cleaning kennels/enclosures; administered medication in accordance with veterinary advice; grooming; walked dogs; provided enrichment; feeding; monitoring general health and well-being; keeping the centre clean and tidy including public areas, vet rooms, kitchens and walkways. Provided the veterinary team with essential information regarding animals’ behaviour and health; restrained animals for veterinary checks; helped make informed decisions regarding diet for the animals in our care. Worked with dogs who had behavioural needs to help them overcome them; worked to create solid routines for the animals with my colleagues; socialised dogs when appropriate in a safe and controlled environment; created activities for the animals to enjoy within their kennels. Provided information and advice to potential owners; lead “meets” where potential owners met their hopeful pet; made decisions on the suitability of potential owners; provided full and detailed histories and known behaviours of animals to ensure customers were aware and ready to take the animal home. Dealt with difficult situations where animals that I had worked closely with were returned after an unsuccessful rehoming or were euthanised for health reasons. Cared for animals that were still owned by people awaiting court dates and as such required careful treatment. Worked within a large team across the centre to achieve the common goal of upholding good welfare. Worked within smaller teams that changed daily in different departments of the centre. Also worked alone within designated sections to care for animals who were my responsibility for that day. Communicated with other staff, other organisations and with members of the public on a daily basis.
