Designed to allow DJs to release their work while respecting copyright laws, Legitmix offered a middle ground for music rights holders and remixers to showcase the incredible creativity and variety of the remix world while offering value to the original artists. Customers were asked to own the original songs before they could purchase the remixes, ensuring the original rights holders were paid while allowing DJs to catalog and connect their work. Unfortunately Legitmix launched just as Soundcloud came on the scene. Ultimately it was impossible to compete against a site that didn't respect the original music creators' rights and allowed users to give away their content for free. None the less, Legitmix succeeded in becoming the world's largest cheerleading music store for a time, ensuring a steady income to dozens of cheerleading music producers and hundreds of DJs for over two years, before changes in cheer music competitions rules brought too much ambiguity to the business model and the site was forced to close. I was the first and last employee at Legitmix and learned a great deal about the tenacity and adaptability needed to manage a startup. I was lucky enough to work with founder Omid McDonald on a daily basis and to become an integral member of the operations team. After shuttering Legitmix Omid and I came up with the idea for Dairy Distillery and launched ourselves into an even bigger adventure.
