Greater Phoenix Area

I currently have a three-pronged position with Waste Resources & Recycling. 1) I inspect and monitor closed landfills to protect groundwater, surface runoff and air; using direct observation, operation of GEM Gas Analyzer, velocity meter and photoionization detector on gas and water well probes. In my landfill role, I also track colleagues' inspection activities at these facilities, and am a member of SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) whose communications I read, and trainings I take on an on-going basis. 2) In a single quarter I conducted stormwater inspections of 286 County facilities, 16 County urbanized, unincorporated areas, 33 construction sites, and 20 outfalls. In this role, I also participate in outreach, and our program is a member of STORM and National Municipal Stormwater Association, that provide welcome communications and trainings. 3) I chair Maricopa County Environmental Services' very active Safety Committee, have completed our Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, and am working through the elements of our Safety Management System.

I use education, relationship-building and code enforcement to keep the citizens of Maricopa County safe from environmental hazards found in food, water, waste and lodging.

At Butterfly Wonderland I cared for butterflies, birds, and a beautiful conservatory full of plants. I taught respectful behaviors for the living collections, and maintained containment protocols while incorporating humor and thoughtfulness. I engaged guests from all over the world in conversation, sharing with my enthusiasm and knowledge for these and other arthropods and hearing about their experiences, as well!

At Summit High School, I've gained loads of experience and completed my teacher's certification. I currently focus on Environmental Science and Biology, but have also taught Earth Science. I've developed standards-based projects that allow students to personalize and find excitement in their learning. I've especially enjoyed establishing supportive learning relationships with my students, and revel in seeing students gain confidence and discover they can achieve academic success.

I'm highly qualified for these as well as earth science. In December 2012, I completed my post-baccalaureate coursework in education and replaced my intern teaching certificate with the provisional one. I've enjoyed sharing my passion for the natural world with my students and establishing positive relationships with them and my other customers (parents and colleagues).
