I am a science educator in Los Angeles County, with over ten years of experience. My research interests include using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a vehicle to deliver culturally responsive pedagogy as well as exploring the ways in which the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) of the NGSS can be used to infuse science learning that is situated in phenomena associated with social justice. My publications have appeared in The Science Teacher, Cultural Studies of Science Education, Electronic Journal of Research in Science and Mathematics Education, and Next Gen Navigator. Additionally, I have published book chapters that address the modern civil rights movement in the contemporary science classroom, as well as the racial underpinnings of zero-tolerance school discipline policies. I have delivered presentations to the membership of the California Association of Science Educators (CASE), Association of Science Teacher Educators (ASTE), the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED), and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) aimed at disseminating research related to the usage of constructivist-based pedagogies in the contemporary science classroom, as well as discussing how teachers can use the NGSS as a means to deliver culturally responsive pedagogy.Finally, I also volunteer my expertise in the field of science education by serving as a peer reviewer forThe Science Teacher, Impacting Education and the Electronic Journal of Research in Science and Mathematics Education, as well as chairing the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee for the California Association of Science Educators (CASE). Additionally, I contribute to the ongoing work of the National Institute of Customizing Education (NICE) and STEM4Real, both non-profit organizations aimed at dismantling the systemic structures that negatively impact marginalized students in the science classroom and beyond.
