CurrentI reimagined and designed both the physical space and curriculum for the Lower School STEM program. The immersive science and engineering lab I developed has become a hub for our school community. Collaborating with the administration, maintenance team, and colleagues, we doubled the size of the lab. It has been intentionally furnished to accommodate students aged three through upper school, as I offer multiple cross-divisional opportunities throughout the year. The design collaboration included taming an overgrown courtyard by installing a community garden. I manage this immersive science and engineering lab year round. The space has been the setting for multiple events I have hosted in conjunction with our Admissions team, our Development team, colleagues, and our Head of School. Reinventing the traditional science fair has provided me the opportunity to develop a school-wide “Celebration of Science” event. Scientists from St. Paul’s and the greater community volunteer to develop hands-on activities related to their field for our students and their families to explore. The Tour de Fourth capstone project my colleague and I organized is an “all hands on deck” journey for our fourth grade classes. They worked alongside our Director of Facilities to build bikes and were the only students in the state of Maryland to utilize Infento kits to do so. Additionally, the students worked with our security team to design an obstacle course to race their bikes. On race day, the entire lower school and fourth grade families cheered for them. During several recent summer seasons, I also have the privilege of collaborating with local high school students and teaching language arts and science to fourth grade students in The Bridges program at The Gilman School. Recently, I was honored to be asked and to serve alongside select members of the community on both The St. Paul’s Schools Strategic Planning and Design Team and the school’s curriculum committee.
