Assistant to Lead Pastor on community understanding and engagement

I was Library Media Specialist (LMS) for 20 years at this Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. I was part of a strong team that made the library a welcoming, well functioning facility that remained central to the learning process of our students. With another LMS and a clerk, I managed this library for about 1200 students and 100 staff. My main job was helping students and staff with whatever they needed from us.There were 65 PCs in the library labs plus more labs in the building that we managed through scheduling, troubleshooting, and teaching skills. We added 90+ iPads, iPod Touches and allowed student to use personal devices for educational purposes. The LMC became the technology hub at school. My contribution was teaching the use of apps (e.g. ThingLink, Book Creator, Skitch) and and Web 2.0 sites, like Weebly and Today's Meet, to faculty and students. "Edtech" became a large focus of my work. I taught an independent class on digital photography to four or five students each year. I maintained the www.sohs.net school web site using Joomla software and had a Twitter book review site, too.The collection at South Oldham High School is approximately 10,000 volumes and 15 magazine titles. I ordered and processed the print materials- books and magazines.The collection steadily became more fiction oriented as more information for research and projects was found via the Internet. I've become very knowledgeable about the current tastes of young adult readers through that process of collection building. We added ebook and audio book titles via the Overdrive service. SOHS has a subscription to the Kentucky Virtual Library (www.kyvl.org) that offers students access to EBSCO databases, so I often taught how to get the most out of searching EBSCO. I was awarded four grants from the Oldham County Educational Foundation for classroom projects that involved reading and writing. I also sponsored the Literary Club and the Anime Club.

I taught a wide variety of library skills to 2nd through 8th graders one day a week at this Catholic grade school. Despite the school's small size and limited budget, I was able to prepare students well for the next step in their education.

I served as librarian in the Maryhurst School, working with troubled teenage girls. At that time, there were 12 faculty members and about 60 girls at this specialized school. I was responsible for all tasks in the small, but well rounded library offered to these students for their school work and pleasure reading. This agency deals with behavior disordered/emotionally disturbed children. I was introduced to a behavior modification system that awarded points for positive behaviors throughout the day. It was effective in teaching troubled students successful behaviors for life. As someone who was raised in a supportive home, it was a huge eye-opener about what these students have to deal with in their young lives. I also became a believer in the power of education and a supportive environment to positively impact the future of these students and free them to live healthy lives.
